Furniture restoration you can do in your own home

If you have an item of furniture you love, you want to keep using it for as long as possible. But, any piece of furniture can start to look tired and worn over the years. The good news is that you can do things to keep your furniture looking good and in good condition.
Of course, it’s possible to get in touch with an expert in French polishing to help you restore your furniture. But, there are also things you can do yourself at home.
The benefits of cleaning furniture
Most people dust and polish their furniture regularly, but this does not mean that your treasured table or cabinet cannot become dirty over time.
It’s a good idea to give the furniture a thorough clean once in a while, especially if it seems to have lost its sheen. This is easy to do; you need a soft, damp cloth and some mild detergent. Put some detergent on the cloth and wipe over the surface of the item of furniture. Then dry the area with a different soft cloth. If you have difficulties removing any grime, you can try using a slightly stronger detergent.
Problems with polish
Polishing furniture can produce a beautiful sheen on the surface. But, if you continue to polish over the months and years, you can end up causing problems. This happens because layers of polish build up, and they have the effect of causing the surface to be dulled rather than enlivened. This is why it’s so important to get rid of all the old polish on furniture items.
The best way to get rid of the old polish is to place some tea bags in boiling water. Once you have done this, you just need to dip a soft cloth into the water and then use it to wipe over the table. You end up with a piece of furniture that looks shiny and bright; a result that is caused by the tannic acid that is present in the tea.
Circles from mugs and glasses
Most people experience issues with mug or glass circles on furniture at some point. They can spoil the look of a favourite piece of furniture if you do not deal with them. The good news is that you can use an everyday product to get rid of these stains. You need to grab a tube of non-gel toothpaste and rub it on the stains. If this does not work at first, you can try mixing some baking soda with the toothpaste.
Dealing with light scratches
Furniture can become scratched easily, but this is not necessarily a major issue. You can use mineral spirits on a damp cloth to rub over the scratches and help them to disappear. This means that you can keep your furniture looking good as new for longer.
Hopefully, the tips we have given you can help you to ensure your furniture keeps looking good. If you have any problems restoring the furniture in your home, it’s a good idea to call an expert for help.
