How to Find the Right Home for You

If you’re looking to move houses or buy another property, there are a number of things you need to watch out for. While many of these might seem obvious or straightforward, you’d be surprised how many people make simple mistakes when deciding what house to buy. It’s a big decision, so it’s not one you should take lightly. Here are a few tips to get you started.
What location are you looking for?
Location, location, location. That’s what they say. The reality is, aside from the size and price of the home, this could be one of the most important factors. You should draw a circle around an area that you’re happy with to narrow down your search. What transport options do you need? Are there other specific areas you want to be near? What sort of amenities do you want to be close to? These are all important factors.
Location can have a huge impact on the price of your home. You might actually find that if you’re willing to move a bit further out, you can get a much nicer house in your price range. Is that a compromise you’re willing to make for a nicer home? Whether you’re looking for a home at the shore or a downtown apartment, location is probably the first thing you should consider.
Is it the right size?
How many rooms do you need? What sort of entertaining space are you looking for? Again, the bigger the house, the more expensive it’s going to be. That normally goes without saying, unless you’re prepared to compromise on location or move somewhere that needs a lot of work. Some people think they need lots of extra bedrooms or bathrooms when they aren’t really necessary. Target the right sort of living space for you when you make your decision.
Does it have specific features you need?
Do you like a nice wood-burning fireplace? Do you want a pond? Do you like gravel driveways? There are loads of different aspects of a property that you might have a specific taste for. While these can often be added over time, it’s even better if they’re already available when you move in. However, while additional features like this can be a nice bonus, they shouldn’t be a priority in your search.
What is security like?
Is the area safe enough for your needs? Is there a strong community with a good neighborhood watch? It’s all very well buying a dream home, but if it’s in a high-crime area, you might want to think twice. Make sure you take careful consideration of security issues when looking for your home.
How much work does it need?
Properties that need more work might be a lot more affordable than you think – but is that something you’re willing to put yourself through? Alternatively, you might need a house that’s ready to go as soon as you move in.
Can you expand?
Some properties offer easy expansion or the possibility to extend in a number of ways, and others don’t. Is this something you think you’re going to need further down the line?
Can you afford it?
Probably the most important factor – can you afford it? Remember, you might be able to get a saving on the list price if you put in a quick offer and the seller is keen to sell quickly.
