It does seem a bit steep, but I'm not surprised. I would say this is due to the rise in cost of building materials. I hear these are on the way down now, so hopefully things level out soon. We looked at renovating our ensuite and bathroom recently, but the quote was way beyond our budget. I only got one quote, so I need to revisit this and shop around. With things the way they are in NZ at the moment, 20k+ for a small bathroom reno is very high. Good luck finding someone who quotes you something more reasonable!

I'm glad I'm not the only one in this boat. I thought I had the funds to go through with a minor home extension. Turns out I'm far from it with the quotes I was given. Our council also charges 10s of thousands for building consents, so I think this is out of reach for us now. Really disappointed.

Maybe it's time there's an inquiry into building consent costs. There are huge variations between councils.

Thanks for the article, Donna. I'm in Tauranga. The cost of a building consent went up $8,849 in February. As I was hoping to do an extension, the building consent alone has knocked the total cost out of my realm of possibility. I wish something could be done about this. An inquiry would be a great first step!
