It seems that everyone has a favourite paint or opinion about which is best. Can anyone suggest good quality paint at a low cost. I can get Resene at trade prices - can that be bettered?
I use Dulux (also at trade) and I have no problem at all.
In the early days I tried cheap Mitre 10 type paint - never again! Completely false economy.
I have never used Resene paints, just their wallpaper. I understand the paint is fine, although perhaps not up to the same standard as Dulux, but then I might be quite wrong and have made a false assumption. I know that many tradesmen use Resene.
I think what I really am trying to say is stear clear of Placemaker's/Mitre 10's own brand paint.
My son does a fair bit of painting. Used to use Resene, tried Dulux and would never go back. We opened a cash trade account at Dulux in Marion Street, Welly, 20% off I think it is.
I use Dulux, which I get at trade prices (sometimes close to half price!) Thay have some great paints - their aquanamel paint (I use for) windows and doors, and their wash and wear (for walls and most ceilings), are both nice to use.
I have used Resenne before. From memory the product I used was supposed to be their best for walls and ceilings - zylon or zylone. I have found the wash and wear to be more wipeable (and one gets lots of practice at wiping walls when one has kids). I think I also used a product called enamacryl for windows - I think this was a resene product. I like the aquanamel more than the enamacryl.
We would recommend Resenes, but it it so expensive, so now we only use it on out PPOR. We use a company called Coating Technology for our rentals now, I highly recommend their paints. We use them for the interior, and Dulux X10 for the exterior as we believe it is one of the best for outside.
I find Dulux and Wattle both great products, definitely on the exterior as I found Resene does not last as long on the exterior as Dulux and Wattle only my opinion, I have painted enough of my own to form an opinion I feel.
I found Resene does not have the elasticity of the other two and cracks a little more freely.
I am in Taupo and maybe the cold may have something to do with it. My 2 cents worth.
discount with Dulux, Superdad? Where do you get it from - hardware stores, or Guthrie Bowron perhaps? Is the discount for their 'normal' line or for their 'trade' line?
I'm about to head into Resene's to get a trade account on their paints. I was surprised to learn that they give different discounts to different traders - they review your usage apparently over a matter of months to decide if they'll give you a better discount. Hmmm. So I don't think I'll be getting the same low prices I was getting when I was using a 'professional' painter, which is disappointing.
I'd like to get Dulux discount too, so please advise where and how!
I agree that it's false economy USUALLY to buy cheaper paints. Benjamin Moore does 3 grades of paint on some of their lines, and we tried the lowest grade exterior semi-gloss and it didn't last a year. Benjamin Moore is well regarded in USA, not so well known here - their prices are very competitive. Anyone use their paints at all?
There was also a cheaper brand paint, NZ made, here in Chch - they had a shop for a short while on Columbo St in Sydenham near Funky Pumpkin but it disappeared: we bought VERY cheap exterior paint from them, used on a concrete block wall. 3 years later the wall is still like new. Don't know who they were or if they're still around elsewhere. Anyone know?? If they are still around and their other paints are similar quality, definitely worth checking into - the paint was CHEAP! There was an older couple in the shop when I was there, and the husband volunteered that 'their paint is really good quality', as though he had a lot of experience of/with it. I didn't pay much attention at the time because I didn't believe it, but in hindsight....
I reckon buy Resene. It's fully 100% NZ owned & operated. Resene also have the lions share of the commercial / industrial market & quite often when a commercial building is built the quotes for paint standards are based on Resene specs. I know a BIG Mitre10 store that is painted with Resene product, right down to the main counter Now that says something huh?
I used Benjamin Moore when it first came out 15 years or so back & it was good. But be careful of paints from overseas because some of them can't handle our high UV levels.
Most of the problems I saw encountered with Resene waterbased enamels like Enamacryl, Lustacryl & Spacecote came down to incorrect application (wrong roller etc) poor prep work or the wrong product in the wrong place.
Resene can sometimes be a bit on the pricey side but your trade price might depend on which shop you are in. Some are re sellers & they can charge as much or little as they wish. It can even depend on how well you get on with the staff. The Resene owned stores might be more rigid on their priceing structures but they can give very good prices for trade.
Also their website www.resene.co.nz has excellent support & info on all it's products. even tells you how to go about painting roofs, interiors etc etc.
BTW I don't work for Resene so I should be fairly unbiased
Ok you don't have to beg
I guess it might have been around longer but that was when I was first introduced to it by the local paint man & have always thought it was new

Hello greenas,
Thank you for your reply but I wasn't at all thinking about the paint but rather about your somewhat interesting choice of words.
You are surely not an ex-con or a rampant homosexual?
