Unit living room to bedroom conversion

Hi there

I'm looking at purchasing a 2 bedroom unit, which has a large living area... there is potential for an alteration that could combine kitchen and living areas, and slice off half of the existing living area to become a 3rd bedroom. Bdrm 3 would have external window.

• Would this trigger building consent?
• What can be done without triggering consent?
• If this conversion needs to be registered with council, what is the mechanism for this?
• Is there a minimum size bedroom, if so where is this information found?
• Is it possible to move the main kitchen bench 10m to an opposite wall, or combine the bathroom and laundry?
• When it comes to selling, what are the key issues to be aware of, have covered off?

John, the unit is part of a two storey block of 6 units.. 3 up 3 down. Does height impact resource consent issues with 2-3 bedroom conversion?
