If you're into sawmilling, joinery, or furniture-making, farming etc then it's doable in Taihape. Remote workers - definitely doable. Lots to do for outdoor fun - hiking, fishing, canoeing, and you can hone your gumboot throwing for the annual comp.
Then there's the nearby towns as well. Palmy is around 2 hours away, but there are other towns nearer.
Probably not a bad place to downsize to either - as long as you're fit and able.
