    Lower commercial rents says Greens

Reforms to lower commercial rents - to fill empty shops says Greens.

Umm - that's not going to do it! The way consumers shop has changed and it's never going back!

Shopping local in your village is still a thing as is online shopping. Travelling into cities, paying to get there, etc and getting around is just not a good use of time anymore!

Greens - the world has moved on! Restoring city vibrancy is not going to happen with small businesses taking up empty commercial spaces. Turn the commercial spaces into 'GREEN' spaces

    regards,

    Donna

The Green Party is pledging to restore city centre vibrancy by ensuring market rent reviews for small businesses can lower rents, and letting councils run rental auctions for spaces that have been empty for longer than 12 months.

    ^^

If the GREENS can create legislation which permits councils to run rental auctions to lease vacant commercial space then its not a giant leap to do something similar for empty residential rental or vacation homes.

Census concludes that around 9% of Auckland homes (nationally about 11%) are empty.

^^ my guess is retirees and BBs taking o/s holidays would be a good few percent - and second homes not actual rentals. Though there’s probably a few ex AirBnBs too that are left vacant to avoid taxes like GST.
There's a tricky GST trap you need to know about if you sometimes rent your holiday home on Airbnb. For GST purposes your own private use of the property can be counted as additional income.
