    Gang Areas

    Hi all

I can't remember where I read it but somebody once said "be careful, Gangs rule towns, full stop".

Does anybody know of towns or areas where their are major gang problems?

    Cheers

    Hi Mr Ironman,

Sorry can't help you with where all the gang areas in NZ are. But I'm sure if you focus on it for a while and ask around, you will find them.
Remember, you always seem to get what you focus on.

    Cheers

So best not to focus on the negative!!!

Jan Somers to name one of many great property investors says understand your purchasing criteria and stick to it - that way the investment has the best possible chance of working out well for you.

....and who's going to argue with someone like her?

        Hi Guys

Simple answer to find out where the gangs are in town - ring the local Police Station and ask.

        Regards

I heard on a recent trip that Foxton used to have a gang problem but they moved to Otaki.
Some of the central NI towns have gang members.

One of my houses is right next door to a gang member. I am sure that the agent that who was selling it to me didn't know that, and it was the rental manager who found it out. But I have to say, that even though I was there for four days renovating it (when we didn't know yet) I didn't notice a thing. No loud music, no abandoned cars, no vicious dogs, just a quiet house in a quiet street with birds tweeting away as only NZ birds can, and some peeling paint on the house next door. A lame old dog waddling around.

And the happy ending is that I have a tenant who has been there around 9 months with no problem at all. And a 20 something percent return.

          cheers-
          Mini

Although gangs can be problematic in the town centres there is not too much of a concern living near a gang house (unless it is the gang-pad - in which case it may be heavily fortified and have traffic coming at all times of day and night) There is

On the whole gang menbers on their own are nice people - and it is generally only when they mix with others in the gang and face confrontations or challenges laid down to them that things can turn nasty.

I have worked with / interacted with gang members and have no problem with them in general - and at times they have even been protective of me !!

However - in certain towns there are parts for me that would be a no-go-zone. I will not name these towns but they are mostly central N.I towns, and a few in the lower N.I too.

One gang family, over three generations,

costs the taxpayer $5 million in justice and welfare costs,

and accumulates more than 400 victims, police research shows.

Head Hunter gang links concern - crime - national | Stuff.co.nz

O'Connor said there reassurances from authorities that crime in West Auckland was decreasing but this did not stack up.
                "You can't hide the bodies."
West Auckland police were overwhelmed and under-resourced and the general lawlessness in the Henderson city centre led local police to believe "it was a homicide waiting to happen", he said.

Waitakere ward councillor Linda Cooper said despite the recent spate of violent crimes she did not feel unsafe in her community.
However, the brutal crimes of the past few months highlighted some deep-seated societal issues.
"People don't respect each other anymore."

There were parenting problems at play and the prevalence of gangs in the area exacerbated the problem, she said.

A small group in the community did most of the damage, she said, adding that as much as 45 per cent of crime in New Zealand was gang-related.

"A small number have a huge effect."

Come sit around the Henderson Train Station, look at the 'good' work done by the youth on the glass panels on pedestrian bridge over the station, and also observe the amount of time various security guards and police patrols in and out of the station...

You will get a flavour of what the wild wild west is like.

PS: AT and AC staff in Henderson office have been offered security escort services if staff feel unsafe when getting to and from the office from their cars or public transport drop off points...

If an employee of a private company feels unsafe while venturing from the carpark to the office, I'm sure the company will do something about it too.

I saw an article a while back stating the council has spent $130k fixing glass panels on that bridge.

They're some sort of fancy glass that costs heaps. Typical, stupid council install really really expensive materials when cheaper ones will do and then has to spend heaps of ratepayers money constantly repairing these over-the-top materials.
