    For the doubting Thomases.

You said it wouldn't happen. Here is a lesson in tough times and people.

    No jobs for expats

    4:00AM Sunday May 24, 2009
    By Jonathan Milne
Kiwis are flying home dejected from tarnished boom-towns like Dubai.

New Zealanders are walking away from their homes in Dubai, driving to the international airport and abandoning their cars with keys in the ignition, as the golden times suddenly end in the towering emirate.
In London, redundant bank traders - once the young Masters of the Universe - take the Underground's Piccadilly Line to Heathrow when they fly out.
Statistics NZ figures show increased numbers of Kiwis returning home (24,500 in the past year to April) though the numbers have not yet reached the heights of 1991 or 2003.
The upsurge is on the flights from the UK, China, Canada, the US and, of course, the United Arab Emirates.
The Department of Labour says this will boost the housing and construction industries. But, at the same time, it means tougher competition for jobs.
The flight home to New Zealand has been unexpected and infuriating for people like Hamilton's Nicholas Down, 43.
When he started work at a Dubai real estate company last year, the first villa he sold was in the city's luxurious Palms development. The buyer paid 60 million dirhams ($30 million) in hard cash. It took three days to count, Down says.

But when the money dried up and his company hired Russian estate agents to offer added inducements - entertaining potential buyers with prostitutes - then Down objected. So his bosses gave him one month's notice.
Down, his wife and two children arrived home in December, after emptying out their Dubai apartment and leaving the car at the airport. He did, at least, mail the keys back to his former employer.
The family was lucky to own a home in Hamilton, and Down went on unemployment benefit until he was able to find work with a receivership company.
Dubai police say they have towed 3000 abandoned cars from the airport carpark - and it's not over yet. There are reportedly 90,000 one-way tickets booked out next month.
Among them are James Hamilton and his family, who will return home when the Dubai school year ends. Hamilton was made redundant from his aviation logistics job in November, but he and his Canadian wife were unable to sell their three-bedroom villa until last month.
"What has struck me most is how quick it hit," he said. "Overnight, construction stopped. People were made redundant from the big corporations, and they were gone within a week."
Hamilton, 35, still hopes to return to Dubai some day. The family is putting some furniture in storage there. In the meantime he will look for work here, using his experience to advise companies on how to trade in the Middle East.

They earn big money overseas, spend big and have a good time (probably slag off NZ as a place with limited scope). Then when things get tough they pop back to good old NZ and go on the dole. Anyone have a problem with this?

      Not at all.

If you were king, which part(s) would you outlaw:

      1. Not allowed to earn big bucks
      2. Not allowed to spend up large
      3. Not allowed to have a good time
      4. Not allowed to slag off NZ
      5. Not allowed to return to NZ penniless or otherwise
      6. Not allowed to go on dole assuming all NZ's dole-eligibilty criteria are met?

          1 - fine by me
2 - fine by me but affects further down
          3 - as for 2
4 - certainly not if you intent to come back with your tail between your legs!
5 - come back with money or accept the consequences for 2 and 3
          6 - works for me!

None of these should be outlawed. Criticism is good in ways, just look what happens when you don't allow it (China in Tibet for instance! Ignore it and it will go away? I don't think so. Myanmar army generals also don't allow criticism of their regime). If you have been a NZ taxpayer and come home broke, of course you should be allowed to collect the dole. I suspect for most decent people, the shame of being unemployed will be motivation enough for them to seek employment or even better start their own business, coming from overseas these kiwi expats will have collected good ideas they can use to start new businesses. I don't moan about it, I accept it and make the most of it.

When I come home to NZ from the UK in a few years time I will be starting my own business. I will be creating jobs for others. I already have some great ideas, watch this space!

                no not at all...

people that made it big overseas and found hardship during these times have the right to come back home and start over again..and most of these people will be skilled or have gained new skills that will benefit Nz. if they paid taxes while in Nz they have the right to receive help from winz.

Does this include people who were on the dole while residing in Nz then left for greener pastures.(but failed) returned and went back on the dole??????????????????

Not tall poppy - put out there to gauge opinion. I hope that those who come back stay when things get easier rather than run away again for the big money.

Umm that will be a good start!

I don't suspect that the returning Kiwis will be happy on the dole. Yep they will give the other job seekers a run for their money and that's a good thing.

Many of the returning Kiwis (like Fingers) will start up new businesses (fresh in enthusiasm and ideas from their time o/s) and we will all benefit.

I say come home bring your $$ - buy houses, start businesses etc.

                      Cheers,

                        imho

you'd be better looking at it like nz provinces

auckland is booming and needs more workers, they come from the outer provinces. result the country operates more efficiently but the provinces become depopulated until economic and lifestyle conditions draw people back

auckland's boom or bust goes into bust and people are left unemployed sitting in small 2 bed apartments just off queen street, after being stuck on the dole the a bit and getting bored to death they return to the provinces and bring with them better coffee and eco-tourism jobs etc.

things work more efficently when you have a mobile workforce that doesn't sit around on the dole complainging about the gov. not providing them work in the wool growing industry

the only other system is the chinese system where you lock down people to their place of birth and prevent them from moving to the cities, where they go anyway and become unemplyed illegal workers who are tolerated in the cities because they do the work that the city people have decided is beneath them
                        have you defeated them?

I think you will find that has changed - millions moved to the cities to work in sweat shops and millions have gone home again since prospects changed.

I consider if some of their high spending money came back to NZ in any form those of us who live here did well out of it. Besides once they take up their NZ residence again they are no different than the rest of us. Perhaps they had a good time for a few years. Surely it doesn't matter where it was. We all had the same opportunity to go overseas and take up these opportunities.

exactly, and the free movement of people while not perfect seems better than the alternative of young chinese couples committing suicide together in the hope that they would be reincarnated together in a city
