Latest breaking news articles, photos, video, blogs, reviews, analysis, opinion and reader comment from New Zealand and around the World - NZ Herald

Global equity markets suffered their worst month of bloodletting ever in October, losing an estimated US$5.79 trillion ($9.8 trillion), and while New Zealand investors did not escape unharmed they got off relatively lightly.
Standard & Poor's Index Services said world markets had lost about US$16.22 trillion in the first 10 months of the year.
Do you even know how much 1 Trillion dollars is!?
    Let alone 16 of them!

    16,000,000,000,000.00 man that's alot of zero's!

The market's overall value and its headline index the NZX-50 have both declined by 33 per cent since October last year.
In my book, this is Financial armageddon! and it hasn't stopped yet!?

    • Lotsa Zeroes

But what do the numbers really mean?

Did 16 trillion actually burst into flames and disappear?
      (the bleeding cash remark)

Or are we seeing adjustments to hugely inflated 'values?'

A recent item suggested that the emissions trading
scam/scheme would mean 'values' of agricultural
land (sheep, beef, dairy) dropping by somewhere
      between 23 and 40 %.

      So?

If the income from those farms remains the same,
it's just figures-mumbo-jumbo. E.g. if the 'value' of
my rental drops 25% but the rental income remains
the same, all that's happened is a form of book-
keeping, the revaluation of an asset. If cashflow
remains the same, said depreciation schedule
adjustment is largely of no consequence, is it not?

      • What it means for everyone is lots less zero's on balance sheets, and lots more zero's (as in nothing) in some peoples bank accounts.

Only two things can happen. 1. Defaults & / or 2. Inflation

That's my take on it anyway.

including MBS or morgage backed securities these things all detonate at different times as the obligations become due the debt is being repaid money out of the system to pay back the debts on the debt etc etc

Theres at least 2 more which at the moment arnt in my mind

This has only been the SubPrime faltering...
OK, but the MBS surely aren't as toxic as the subprimes?

More toxic as you get in to it

CDO's CDS's CMO's and CLO securities still to go.

The "bail out package" remember is for 700 billion a day to cover defaulting counter party risks and bankruptcy for all those parties selling paper to each other...

                  • I didn't believe that at first. So I checked. Assuming we're talking US trillions, not UK ones...
                    $1,000,000,000,000 / 1000 = 1,000,000,000 notes
                    1,000,000,000 / 9 (bills per mm) = 111,111,111 mm
                    111,111,111 mm / 1000 = 111,111 metres
                    111,111 metres / 1609 (metres/mile) = 69.05

Close enough. The downward compression probably squishes more than 9 bills per mm, which accounts for the fewer miles.

Don't say I do nothing for you.

                          • Arrrr Badger our long time soothsayer of bad tidings that may be coming.

I see that you say could be coming our way.......can you be more forthcoming please?

If bad tidings could be coming our way, then do you have any words of wisdom that could forestall the event?

But you say could be coming our way, then these bad tidings may not come our way. If so why not?

I am sure that there are many PTers who would be interested in your answers.

                            • Actually ya all keep saying soothsayer of bad tidings! Its just the numbers stacking up..

Yet much stuff Ive posted 8-9 months ago has begun to show in reality. Its not rocket science to figure out...

Depends how much printed money is created where it comes and where it goes from like the IMF and im not privy to those numbers untill after the fact...

You dont really think an economy of house flippers does anything real to finance Keys schemes?

NZ is in debt! Theres a couple of places to loan some fictional money to finance Nationals agenda the IMF and World Bank! These guys though tend to want to own most of the resources and means of production in the country they loan to! In exchange for those freshly printed fiat notes + interest...

Too true, but then when it comes to parasites, currency traders are up there with derivatives traders.
