Don't waste any time trying to find out, just get rid of a dud asap, it's incredible how much they can stack onto a power bill.

Cheers, got this reply on another forum

Diaphragm splits or perishes - leaks or even gushes, overflows.
Valve washer deforms, effectively changing the pressure setting - overflows.
Valve washer perishes - leaks, makes noises, overflows.
Valve seat pits or splits - leaks, makes noises, overflows.
Valve washer gets dirt or scale on it - leaks, overflows.

New diaphragms, washers and valve seats are available for the common types - cheap and easy to replace. Resetting the pressure head is necessary after changing any components.

          In or Out?

H/W cylinder vales can come in two flavours:
          • a pressure reducing feed valve
          • a pressure relief valve

Yes, repair kits are available. Whether it's
cost effective to muck around with that, or
replace it, depends on your time constraints
          and practical abilities.

          Or get a plumber.
