    Replacing Kitchen Cabinet Doors ?

Kitchen not to bad, doors and draws have problems with hinges and worn around edges of draws.

What is the cheapest way to get and install some new doors and draw fronts, where can you go.

Looking for something in the interim before kitchen is replaced in 3/4 years.

Looks very ugly and dilapidated at moment.

    Auckland house.

Is it an old kitset kitchen?? Perhaps you could get replacements doors to fit, if it is.

Perhaps a paint with enamel paint??

Replacing the hinges might be a problem. Check out Placemakers or Bunnings and see if they have anything similar.

Do you think painting with an enamel paint will effectively "bog" up the draw edges that are a little bit flakey, if I can solve that problem maybe I can get away with just painting.

Or even just a new front panel cut out.

The hinges are those annoying adjustable ones with a swinging panel off the door, so when the hinges go the door wont shut properly.

Either I cant adjust the hinges properly or they are knackered.

Unfortunately the previous owner who did a lot of "handywork" on the house interior himself, probably did have skills about the same level of mine, yet didnt let that stop him

Unsure what the doors are made of (MDF??) You may be able to get away with repairing them by sanding them back and just painting the whole door. Re-painting with Aquanamel would probably be a good idea in the kitchen (saves things getting wet again)

Builders Bog - it's not called that but staff in Placemakers etc will know what you're talking about. It's a two-chemical mix together (work with it very quickly before it sets) compound. The chemical interaction makes it get quite warm. Great stuff for fixing edges!!

Also have a look in the DIY shops (Placemakers, Mitre 10, Bunnings) for the hinges. Take one with you, staff are pretty good about finding stuff.

If you do a good enough job, you may not have to replace the kitchen for a while.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

we were thinking about doing this in our rental too (haven't looked into it properly yet). It might pay to check with a paint shop or a painting expert, but I've heard the best way to do it is spray paint it, rather than having paint brush marks everywhere. Will be interested to hear how it works out.

              Re : Hinges.

Cheaper MDF kitches can have issues if you replace the hinges with different makes, with the screw holes in subtly differnet places. The softer MDF's can't handle multiple holes so close together, so you'll need to filler the old holes with a sturdy "drillable" wood filler before fitting the new hinges

Plenty of very modern kitchens use translaminate glass doors which, depending on your existing design, could exceed your expectations.

This is an old thread .
I am contemplating replacing the cabinetry doors on all kitchen cupboards.
Is their a crowd that does this - or am I better off to measure the doors myself and make a custom order with a kitchen design place?

                      Any recommendations?

Dezignatek do thermoform doors. They'll even reseal old ones.

If doors are in good condition apart from paint finish, recoating is a possibility - take off doors, recoat offsite, put back - but have anecdotes that suggest not to expect a long life for the finish. Recently looked into Dream Doors for a client - they are a franchise, replace old doors with new. Check Nocowboys first - some v poor feedback. But being franchise it depends a whole lot on the local people.
