    New Stadium in Auckland

    Hi All,

Do we really need a (proposed) plan "B" New Stadium for the 2011 Rugby World cup.................................

I say HELL yeah!! since my apartment is 5 minutes walk if that!! If it is to where speculators say it will be.

Good bye Eden Park I have always hated going to watch games on your ground and though i have never been to the cake tin I hear its pretty good. I say that we should take a look at grounds like Rugby park in Hamilton and say others like the Cake Tin and build another stadium and knock Eden Park over..........build an old folks home like they did in Wellington.

Time to go back to work...........................

Totally agree on this one. I am all for it. The caketin is a wonderful asset. I love Eden Park but I think it is past its used by date. I say build it and the sooner the better.
You could have all matches, events, concerts etc in this and it will give AKL CBD a bigger heart.
Also 100% for public transport, no residents moaning about noise and lights etc.

It is a shame they did not think of this before building that other events centre just a few hundred metres away. I believe the first one has already gone way over budget. Now they will have 2.

But I agree that it is a good idea. However it seems strange that the cost of building the entire stadium is about the same as building 2 new grandstands at Eden Park.

I wouldn’t trust the financial spin, if Vector is anything to go by, we will all end up paying for it, unless it comes out of the Rugby World Cup profits, but I don’t see that happening.

I agree with Ivi here however Eden Park has not secured the final and I for one would hate to see it go to say Jade Stadium.

What ever happens I think we the rate (Jafa council ) or tax payer will foot the bill, however what is the economic gain/s over this time and into the future. What are the social costs for keeping Eden park and developing furthur

Right or wrong the powers that be will do what ever the hell they want, and all i know is Rugby is the winner on the day.

Out of interest did anyone own any apartments that they rented over the duration of the America's Cup?? and if so what sort of yeild did it return for that period of time compared to normal returns.

          Cheers

As a Wellingtonion living in Auckland I support the Cake Tin model, ie build it central close to railways and motorways.

Eden Park is a mongrel to get to and the trains always seem to have problems.

However I don't think the waterfront is the best position. It's prime land that we need to develop for everyone to use, not drop in a behemoth stadium blocking the coastal and island views. A stadium is very inward looking so unless you're going to build it out of glass it's a waste of prime land and views... in my opinion.

              Hi Tim360,

I agree to a point in what you say, however i decided to go for a short stroll down ANZAC ave and Beach road yesterday before classes and the views of the proposed site are blocked by shipping containers. The council I think need to be shot due to the way the planners have not taken into account the topographical nature of the area when granting consent to apartment buildings in the CBD area. If they had a clue between them a layered height restriction would have been applied so that the lower leveled apartment buildings would not block others above them etc etc etc.

The only real thing i think apart of the close nature of where i live to the area we are talking about is that the CBD could handle traffic comming into as well as buses and trains as i hear approximitly 120k Aucklanders travel into the CBD each day. I dont think 60k wanting to watch a rugby game should be a problem, but then again if I could see into the future id be selling lotto tickets.

If I could see into the future I think I'ld rather buy lotto tickets than sell them!

                  Hi Ted

I still believe that the CDB is the best place for a stadium, as you pointed out it can handle the volumes of people. I just don't think it should be on prime waterfront land.

I've got no suggestions as to where else in the CBD it could be but I'm thinking of the other mega-stadiums I've been to (Melbourne, Cardiff, Sydney, London...) they are all well located near mass transport, but not absolute waterfront (ok Millenium stadium is next to the river...)

North Harbour stadium would have been ideal if we had a rapid rail system up there...

                    Hi Tim

Yeah the shore sounds nice but then the issue remains with Eden Park and where its located.

I hear that the petrol tanks over near the Fish market are being removed and that land is going to be used, however its still on the water front so same issue i surpose.

Heres a left feild idea............. i went to Vic markets about 2 monthsor 6 weeks ago (what ever) and I hadnt been there for 15 years...........I hadnt missed a thing still the same. I really dont know how they survive, anyway I digress. The Rugby park and Vic Market area is it big enough (wouldnt think so however) to have a stadium in ???

CBD one side, Ponsonby the other, motorways north and south.

Great location for me as I live just up the road in Freemans Bay, but I think the Vic Market area is going to be developed shortly by it's new owner.

Kitchener group is the owner and I am sure they would sell at the right price (or a land swap - ie tank farm land).

Agree that it should be CBD. I though the original plan for the event centre was for it to be a stadioum but it got downsized.

Isn't the caketin by the water on prime land (I have never been there it was just my impression)

Can i just throw Cardif's melinium stadium into the mix as a working example of a monster staduim right in the center of the city. by using sensible design the bulk of the staduim is actually below ground level and therefore the above ground visable bit is actually lower than the surounding buildings. the city goes into party mode after an event. (E.G the ABs game last year)

                          cheers
                          Rhys.

Yea well...the nice big dangling carrot of a shiny new place to play should be put out of the equation.
Emotional bribes taint the decision process.

                            My main concern is access.
Whenever something is on in Wellington...everything becomes more difficult logistics wise.

What will be the effect of the swap deal the council undoubtedly has in mind with respect to other land.

Who will gain on this and who will loose.

North shore/ Albany. The CBD is to much hard work.
Other countries either have stadiums/ event venues right in there city center with outstanding transport or on the out skirts . As AKL has poor transport and infrastructure in its CBD the out skirts is the only realistic easy option left.

That way Auckland can finally do something properly from scratch and be setup for the future.
Get some decent transport in place, Parking , Roading etc

If North Shore does not get on the plan now they might get guzzumped by Manukau coucil whom I am sure would love the chance to have a venue at Flat Bush.
