    Going to Aussie? Think again...

The joys of moving to Australia.
    Going to Aussie? Think again...

New Zealanders desperate to move to Australia are being told not to bother.
Rather than the good life they are expecting, they risk finding themselves broke and homeless and getting caught up in serious crime and prostitution, an Australian newspaper reported yesterday.
Statistics New Zealand figures show 29,900 permanent and long-term migrants left for Australia in the year to June in the biggest transtasman exodus for three years.
Brisbane's Sunday Mail said most were choosing Queensland - 16,000 short- and long-term-stay New Zealanders arrived at Brisbane Airport in the year to June.
The sunshine state appeals to New Zealanders because its weather is better than at home, wages are higher, and unemployment and the cost of living are lower.
But Nerang Neighbourhood Centre co-ordinator Vicky Va'a said there was a growing downside to the migration, with reports of homelessness among New Zealanders, teens "going to Surfers to prostitute themselves" and others aligning themselves with gangs and committing serious crimes because of a lack of jobs or access to services.
Her advice to Kiwis considering the move to Australia is simple and was reported in yesterday's Mail: "Don't come here, especially if you don't have a job, don't have money or a back-up plan if things don't work out."
Last year, Ms Va'a wrote a report for the Maori Party outlining the challenges facing community workers.
She said young New Zealanders away from their parents were graduating from petty offences to drug-dealing and gang-related crime.
Her report also said that according to staff at the southside office of the Brisbane Children's Court, New Zealanders accounted for 28 per cent of their case workload.

Umm if you're skilled you'd do okay I'd say - though their unemployment rate is climbing so you'd have to fight your corner to get a job over a local.

    cheers,

16000 short & long term stay? What's short-term? Two weeks at SeaWorld, DreamWorld and Crikey Zoo?

I saw a similar report yesterday on TV, I think the report does not give the all picture. From the report, it seems that only those who are not highly qualified will
struggle there, who are struggling even in NZ before going there. The report did not talk about the engineers, doctors and specialists ... who are able to be in a better situation.

In a recent survey the most livable city in the world was Melbourne, in addition to Perth Adelaide and Sydney all where in the top ten and Auckland came no. 10 !

The nice thing about Australia, they give priority for locals over foreigners in general, what I noticed in NZ they give priority to white people (hiring from abroad) over locals who are not white.

Another feeble plea to get Kiwi's to stay on a sinking ship. These stories appear every few months in the Hearld in an attempt to make the grass look a little less green.

I'm a Kiwi who moved accross the ditch a few years ago, and yes the grass is a lot greener. Mid GFC I found a job in under 3 weeks getting paid 30-40% more.

Rent is now comparable to Auckland

The cost of living is not much different

Better weather, more to do, more to see, Melbourne actually has a pulse as apposed to Auckland's pace maker.

Property is a nightmare to get into though, so will still look at NZ for investment but not much else.

Melbourne is my favourite city so far (and we lived there for 6 years) - but I think you need to have lots of cash so you can live in an inner suburb like South Melbourne, or Albert Park - go out as often as you wish but still have a good home environment to enjoy staying in (not a shoebox apartment).

We'd go back there to live if we had a spare $2m for a reasonable house; and cash for enjoying the nice restaurants and bars and overseas holidays.

                    cheers,

Yes, I heard Julia was in trouble re the Malaysian Asylum Policy.

I would be surprised however if the ALP considered John a viable alternative.

That's it in a nut shell... That maybe one of the dumbest articles I have ever read. Don't expect to come to Australia and have it handed to you on a plate because you will be disappointed.
My family have been here 8 years and have never been discriminated against because we are Kiwi...the discrimination theory is just not right in ours and our friends experience in fact some aussies reckon if you have got the gumption to get off your ass and move to oz then you can't be too bad.
We love livng here...Comparing Tauranga where we are from to Coffs Harbor where we live now the weather is much warmer...the sea temp barely gets below 20dc....the people are wonderful....the money is so much better and the cost of living is is a great deal cheaper and I mean a great deal cheaper....On a recent trip back to NZ we were shocked at the price of food and petrol in NZ and wondered how on earth a young family could survive comfortably in NZ...it must be very hard to make ends meet..Heath care is also very cheap in Australia which is great for young families.

I know OZ isn't going to suit everyone but the facts are from the latest census is that for every 8 people that leave NZ to permanently reside in OZ only one person returns...that says it all really....

The great thing is.....We have a choice....

My wife and I are having serious thoughts about jumping the ditch. Due largely to my wife's profession, (I have my own business that could be run from Australia, or alternatively could go back to doing what I am qualified to do which is construction project management) we would earn in the order of an extra NZD$200k pa more than we do here, for less work. This is based on somewhere decent like Melbourne or Sydney (although I would prefer Perth) not some back country town 2000km away from anything. We are in our mid/late twenties and see the value in getting some decent cash behind us over the next 5 years or so which can then be further invested into largely property.
In all honesty, the only thing keeping us here at present is family.

My familys all in the other Island and it is generally cheaper to fly from Aussie to visit them than Tauranga - might be worth me considering the jump.
