    Broken shower

My tenant broke the shower gonna cost $200 to fix.
He wants to fix it himself as he thinks he can get it done cheaper.
I'm worried if the job isn't done right it could cause damage. What should I do?

Whats actually broken? Mixer handle, pipe / rose, door.
Hard to give an opinion without knowing.

He's not supposed to fix it himself. He's supposed to pay for a professional.

It's one of those heads with the tap/opener built into it the whole unit needs to be replaced.
Yes Eugene he wants to get his own plumber to do it but I doubt he will and may try use someone else.
Can I choose to get my on plumber to sort it or do I have to sort something with the tenant?

It's your shower, right? You get who you want to fix it.

it's your property, therefore it is entirely up to you. the tenant has no say in it.

sounds like a Felton shower. easy to replace, but I'm surprised it needs a whole new unit. parts are readily available. $200 seems a little high.

Discover the perfect shower mixer, kitchen, laundry and bathroom tapware for your home – including electronic digital mixers. Find spare parts, technical information, installation guides and product FAQs. Felton products are fully backed by local New Zealand customer support and warranty. Available from plumbing merchants nationwide.

I had one go a while ago. The head snapped off leaving the end threaded in the mixer. I was easily able the unscrew the broken bit with a pair of pliers. A new head from Miter10 for under $100 with a bit of thread tape. Job done.

You can buy each bit separately or the whole thing as a kit. If it's only one bit that's busted there is no need to buy the whole kit.

Within reason. You can't expect the tenant to be happy to pay a $200 bill for an $80 part that a 5 year old could fit. Would you call in an electrician to change a broken light bulb?

He broke it, why wouldn't you give him a chance to fix it? Those Felton shower products are child's play. The week after he's "fixed" it go over to inspect it. Turn the shower on for 10 seconds then unscrew the shower head and check that it's not wet behind the hole. If it is wet then he's had his chance and you bring in your plumber.

Something else I just thought of, how old was the shower head and how did he break it? If it was only a couple years old and he was using it to do chin-ups then definitely he pays to have it fixed. But if it was 15 years old and it broke off in his hand while he was adjusting the angle to wash his flowing golden locks then perhaps it's ware and tear. They are only made of plastic and do go brittle over time.

My buybear with them is that you can't get the rubbers for the heads, so when they start spraying out of the ball joint you have to buy a new head. :-(

We replaced the head on ours with an extansion one from Bunnings: http://www.bunnings.com.au/products_...--Shower+Heads

Just needed another part to attach from memory. Work well for OH who always had to duck to take a shower.

It is fair the tenant should be able to replace it - after all (s)he broke it. It is also fair that you want to know the job is done properly. So why don't you co-operate and do the job together?
