Lived there for 18 years, it is a nice spot and good for families.
Granted it is about three times the size than when I left (2000) but there is a school there now and the golf course is half decent.
Not sure how the new subdivision has impacted the area though.
Surely the most desirable areas in Manukau would be around Howick, Bucklands Beach, Eastern Beach etc.
Similar to the shore but closer.
You are dead right about Howick being a great place to live. I lived in Bucklands Beach and Cockle Bay for many years. Actually any of the beaches out in the Manukau Eastern suburbs are nice. Mellons Bay is very very nice. The commute to Wiri would also be only a moderate one but the roads can get very congestive out there.
Dannemora and the new Flat Bush would also be great living options for someone that wanted to be closer to Wiri. But these are inland suburbs not at the beach.
Just little bit of advice since the area has been brought up, i live in Pakuranga and commute to Manurewa most days. Driving home and to work is a 20-30min drive at peak traffic, ive never hit gridlock as it tend to start at about mount wellington. The Highbury motorway on ramp going to work can get pretty packed too so i tend to drive to Otara then the motorway, never any traffic.
I've been living in Howick since 1991 and it is certainly a very nice place to live, especially since there are so many places with various attractions to visit. Short drive to both Meadowland shopping centres, Pakuranga Plaza and of course Botany Downs shopping centre. If you are after some real character, then try central Howick Town on Picton Street. Before Meadowlands, Botany Downs and Sylvia Park, this was the place i always looked forward to on the weekends.
Houses, similar to everywhere else is climbing fast however. 4 bedroom freehold houses are anything from $700k onwards.
IT Solution Architect by day.....property investor by night. All i need now is the bank as my butler and a cave with high capital gains.
I'm now working in Wiri and cannot stand the 2 hour commute from the Shore.
What are decent suburbs to rent in and around the Wiri area?
Yep we have had a bad run of late havent we.
I work in Wiri, and live in Torbay.
My answer is flexible hours sort of.
Arrive early around 6.00am and go to work or the GYM.
Start late one day by dropping kids off to school.
Finish either at 3 or 4, or stay back to 7.30.
You can avoid it somewhat, but its always going to get you now and then.
P.s. There is nothing mate, once your over that bridge your into South Auckland !!!!!!!!!!!
Thought of Goodwood Heights, Totara Heights, and possibly the Gardens? Goodwood Heights is the closest suburb to Manukau that is reasonably nice. Brilliant views there, a friendly property manager of mine lives there (Goodwood Heights) and says all the tenants who rent around that area are pretty good.
Its the price you pay for living a better quality of life.
OR is it the price to pay for your lifestyle ? Surely commutting a couple of hrs each way is not the desired quality of life.
But you are not alone - I am astounded on a daily basis when I see the traffic queue heading north on the southern motorway - more than the otherway round or it is the bottleneck (tunnel)?
East Auckland (dannemora, botany, howick, eastern beaches are all good areas)
