    Internal Gutters overflowing

    Hi All.

We currently have an internal gutter between the main house and the extension that overflows into the ceiling when there's a once in a year deluge like we had last week.

I would love to hear from people who had similar issues and what you did to overcome this issue?

    FYI, gutters are cleaned regularly.

    Cheers.

    1. is there an emergency over flow?

    2. what is the dimension of the gutter (before it overflows) The cross sectional area determines the capacity, and

    3. what is the roof area of catchment that the gutter serves?

Have you checked you drainage pipes?

I had similar issues - in fact had internal waterfalls at one stage down my window in a corner window seat area. Took a while to work it out - over a period of 5 years actually and damaged soffits at the downpipes area, but it was a blocked inlet pipe into the water tank (rain water collection) - so one half of the house roof collection area wasn't able to drain away quickly. (That was 8 years ago). Cleared that out and no issues until this year.
This year had similar issue on the other side of the house - this time it was a blocked drain pipe at a junction underground- found by getting a drain camera guy in - cut the pipe and copious disgusting smelling water flushed loads and loads of crap out.
Both times I got plumbers, roofers and builder opinions who were all doom and gloom about internal gutters etc, in the end it was my dad (ex cow cocky) commonsense who gave me the idea to look in these areas.
      Hope this helps.
(The water collection system did not then have inspection caps anywhere - since installed)

We had the same issue years ago and solved it by inserting a butanol gully liner that went 900 mm up each side of the gully.

Along the lines of what John the builder indicates. Is that it may be possible to put much wider internal guttering in. I was able to increase mine to 1.2 meters and never had another issue. Downpipes and drainage would also have to have the correct capacity

If emergency overflow is adequate there should never be a flood.

what is the current gutter size and is there a natural overflow point?

              No, good point!

The gutters was checked by a roofer and we had someone regularly cleaned it.

Our roofer didn't advised that. Am I right to assume that if this is an option, he would have recommended this?
