    Cost to stain a deck

    Hi,

I have a 60sqm deck with a fence around it. All up area to be stained is 100sqm. I want to stain both the deck and the fence and i got a quote of $2000 for clean and two coats of stain. It seems reasonable but i had a look on google and there is some suggestion that the cost should be between $8-9 sqm which means i should pay under $1000 for my deck. Has anyone stained their deck recently? What is the going rate?

    Thanks a lot.

Good idea Nice. But i do not want to muck trades people around. So trying to get a feel from people who may have done it recently to see if the quote i got is in the ball park or way out there. Thanks.

Did they say how long the job would take. $2K is 40 hours @ 50p/h. They wont be able to do it one trip as the deck will need to be dry. How much cleaning /prep is involved. Any difficult areas? It sounds like the tradie is charging at the top end per hour for that sort of work, so I would make sure his work is worth it.

Thanks TheLibrary. There is of course also the cost of materials (the stain) for 100sqm so its not just labour cost. The price is all inclusive. No difficult areas other than a timber seat running along the fence.

Hi Judge - best you head to a local merchant and check out the price of stain also. You are in for a surprise as to the range of types and prices.
I guess your quote states what brand, type & colour which will help.

Deduct $260 GST, say $400 for stain, more for brushes + cleaning materials, more for providing/hiring a waterblaster, travel etc...

The reputation of the tradesman is important too - a good job is worth paying for.

Wow - I would have thought $2k was too much but then again 100sqm is a large deck...

If it was for an investment I would stain the deck myself rather than pay someone but each to their own.

I dont think any tradesman would be surprised if you got at least 1 more quote--keep in mind coverage for stain depends on how porous the wood is (old-bare?) and the fence can take alot longer if it has alot of wood pieces close together.

$20 m2 + GST is standard around Tauranga, give or take. Always aim for 3 quotes. Trades people who are too cheap often don't pay tax,'s have insurances, do a proper job or simply don't pay themselves properly. You can always potentially save money doing it yourself, depending what you earn on your day job.
