    Tax for those earning $25k or less to be eliminated..

    ..I think that's a great Maori Party policy (announced on TV1'S Agenda 13.8.05) for us poor people.

        Watch negative gearing take off if a policy like that came in.
        Fortunately not too many people take the policies of this particular party very seriously.

          Both the UK and Aus provide for the first part of ones income to be tax free (I think). Not as high as $25k but I think it works out well for kids etc. In NZ, your first £9,500 you only pay 15% after rebates.

          Are these guys going to get any seats. I am too far away to have my finger on the pulse of the Maori electorates.

            Gawd I hope not! I don't think any party who has race or religion (or plants for that matter) as their basis has a place in parliament.

              Hope so.

              They're certainly giving Labour a run for their money.

              I extracted this from their website: "The MÄORI PARTY is for all citizens of this country"

              So it's not Drelly it's not a race based party. But an organisation founded on maori values & Te Tiriti O Waitangi (TOW) Partnership between the British Monarchy (BM) & the maori people.

              As the BM have never honoured the TOW. It the Monarchy should ULTIMATELY BE RESPONSIBLE for any financial settlements that;

              a. have taken place;

              b. & that are still to be resolved.

              c. & not us the NZ taxpayers!

              To summarise the Queen Of England & or her successor(s), should bankroll (from the billions of $$$ her/their predecessors have plundered during their colonial era) the WHOLE of or FULL COST of the above by;

              d. reimbursing the public coffers of all & any costs
              concerning (a) above;

              e. & by financing all settlements to come, till they are
              resolved in full.

              f. I'm sure that'll attract a lot of public support!

              g. Would that not be in the fiscal & public interests of our nation?

              7. You bet my favourite PINK (with PURPLE POKA
              DOTS) bloomis it'll be!

                I think it's ludicrous to place modern values and perspectives on 100+ year old events. Attempting to take the British Government to task on it is a complete joke. It's just a weak attempt to get votes.

                On that basis, how many Maori tribes would be liable for the massacres inflicted on other tribes and cultures after 1840? The Moriori were effectively wiped off the map after the invasion of the Chathams in the 1860's. Perhaps a war crimes court should be established and lands confiscated in Taranaki as punishment?

                If the maori party were truly for all NZer's, they would never have called themselves by that name. I wouldn't vote for the "pakeha party" either.

                  Hey Dave,

                  I'm not too fond of political debates however, regarding your comment above. Lands were in fact confiscated in Taranaki . It was one (if not the) most noted confiscations of Maori land. Maori refused to fight or leave and were forcibly removed, marched to Otakou (Dunedin) imprisoned (some for up to 18 years without trial) in caves dug out of cliff faces, and forced into hard labour, year round, in harsh conditions, costing many their lives.

                  Perhaps you would like to pick another area like the foreshore, oops thats gone too. Ummm whats next?

                  Regards,
                  Marcus.

                      That's a big onus of responsibility on the kid. I mean, they're effectively working from the minute they pop out.

                          Dave any sort of massacre is horrendous & unjustifiable.

                          Thanks to the Waitangi Tribunal the moriori have been & still are seeking legal redress on various issues

                          On the contrary I think it's a great idea that the British Monarchy (& not the British Government) should be held financially accountable for the grievances perpetrated by it's subjects at the time. & not us the NZ TAX PAYER

                          Don't you agree that it'll be a great cost saving to the public purse Dave? & by the way this is my idea & not a maori party policy. It'd be great tho, if they'd take the bull by the horns & made it their mission to have it realised.

                          FYI;

                          - the NZ government derived it's present political status from England.

                          - Legally her royal highness the Queen Of England is Head Of State to this great & beautiful country of ours.

                          kind regards,

                          Monica

                            To me the Maori party is a fence sitter party which will fall to what ever party that will help them acheive their goals while/if in power.........sounds alot like MMP to me on the race question ya threw Drelly I think their policey is based around the cultural ideology.

                            Being Maori/Spanish/Scots/English I actually think its a good ideology based on my own morals or ethics but whats sad is every party is saying tax break but what else are they saying.

                            I once wrote to Tariana Turia because of her stance on the fore shore, I told her I didnt vote for her in the last election but gave Labour the party vote, I also said that I didnt vote against her either and that I would surport her solely because she did what the people who voted her into GOVT wanted her to do. I also siad I didnt like her friends from Wanganui .

                            6months later at my fathers unveiling my Dads first cousin a man I had never met before asked me if I had written to any politicians lately! as soon as he said this I knew exactly what he was talking about, my gilrfriend also knew what he was talking about as she knew I wrote to the minister and my face went bright red (something im not used to). My fathers cousin was a personal friend of hers and she had recognised my last name and had told him what I had written to her.

                            It was awesome to know that they actually read emails and ill keep my promise to her and right or wrong I keep my word!
                            It's hard to beat a person who never gives up.

                              Maori Party Seat In Parliament

                              If the Marae Digi-Polls and TV reports are to be believed (there's a comment there waiting to be said, but I won't), it may not be stretching it too far to see the Maori Party TAKE ALL SEVEN Maori seats from Labour at the next election.
