Fireplace Installation in Chch (crazy expensive?)

    Hi all,

Just bought a new property in Chch and found out the permit on the fire is about to expire... No problem I thought and went down to Mitre 10 where I picked up a clean air model & flu kit for $1600. The sales guys said it would cost around $500 to get installed...

2 quotes later and we are actually looking more around $1800 - $2200... Apparently it needs a new larger hearth plus some other random stuff to get a permit.

Is this all legit ? Or are they just trying to milk some extra cash out of me? Seems excessive to me.

Cost us $3000 all up in Tauranga if thats any help, that was with a heating grant of $500 and we had a hearth laid by a friend so it was flush with the carpet.

I'm in the process of getting one installed in Auckland. It's going to cost about $4000 in total. Installation cost is about $1100 (includes consent fee, reflector and flashing). As per Maccachic I'm getting the hearth tiled independently.

I'm inclined to think anything that involves councils and permits is going to be excessive....just think about how warm you will be and it won't matter if the power goes off. Relax and enjoy it!

Install was $700 for ours. It was $3000 all up ($3500 before Govt clean heating subsidy) including, fire, hearth, permits, flue, chimney etc.

Ah the dreaded existing hearth not big enough yes been there done that and yes the CCC is pedantic on this so make sure the guys you have doing the hearth job get the measurements dead right! Costs of install sound about right sorry.

Lol, we had one installed last year and it cost over $6k, and that's after the $1200 government fee:

It is one that was inserted into a wall, here are the costs:

                  Fireplace itself $3000
Zero clearance box (needed cause going into a gib surround) $1000.
                  Flue, cap etc approx $1500.
                  Installation $1000
                  Permit $400
                  Hearth $300
Builder to frame up to take fire and then to make good with fire proof board, paint etc. $1000

And this is what it looks like, nothing too fancy really:

Expensive eh? But that's as cheaply as it could be done.
                  Squadly dinky do!

Open fires are different I believe to a clean air fire; as illustrated above.

Providing you already have an existing fire then you can replace it with clean heat approved version
