the fact that they may be in trouble is what makes investing there attractive, the kiwi peso versus the dolar is at record highs and interest rates in the US are far lower than here. I for one have switched my new IP investing to the US for the short term, far more attractive yields.

I know you are in Wales rather than NZ, but still a 'foreigner' - what steps are you taking to id suitable properties and purchase them? Is it possible to access low US lending rates?
