        Why would you?
There must be more to this story than an attention grabbing snip.

Because it's almost certainly a requirement for them to do something else such as increase the number of carparks etc.

          • auckland council doing everything it can

to make sure auckland goes up

in the world's most liveable city race

part of that is tall, top quality apartments

the bill is now in on those

and it's going to be too much for aucklanders to pay

2 new apartment projects in downtown Auckland are leading the market to new price points as high as $16,000/m²

Opening apartment prices ranged from $385,000 for a 33m² “Sky pad” studio, at just under $11,700/m²

to $16,200/m² for a pad on the top floor

lenny + penny could probably afford to buy there

but i bet they'll prefer their lifestyle blocks

what about the rest of us?

will accommodation supplements be lifted by increasing taxation on the rest of nz?

will the city embark on its own social housing building program paid for by fuel taxes, motorway tolls, poll taxes and rates rises?

will auckland become a place that business and buyers flee from?

a place to visit for the free events

but not a place to live and do business?

Plenty of wealthy foreigners around the world to replace us.
After all, we are continuously being told their buying up houses in Auckland is good for us.

We don't have a housing bubble we have a free market.

If people don't like Auckland prices don't live there.

                • should a small island nation

that makes its way in the world by trade

                  wrap itself in trading restrictions

or learn to live within its means?

                  • If you wish to continue to sell off prime freehold property without restrictions, then don't go bleating about prices going up and outside the reach of locals.

Some people are extremely naive and short sighted.

                      • if you believe the sole reason for rising auckland house prices is 'foreigners" buying old houses

i guess you'd try to limit them

                        but i don't believe that

i think rising prices are a function of the rising costs of new housing

which has everything to do with nimbies

and nothing to do with foreigners

                          Yeah right.

Despite the high prices & strong international competition, sale agreements were signed in Shanghai last month on 10 apartments in the Victoria Residences development across from the SkyCity casino.

                            • my understanding

is that when that redevelopment was first proposed

nimbies killed it through council as they thought it had too many apartments

so it sat and rotted for another 10? years before this proposal with even more apartments was approved

and now you blame a wealthy chinese for buying a top floor penthouse, that the nimbies never wanted built, for raising the cost of auckland housing?

what's that got to do with expensive developments on the fringe

where kiwis want large, unique houses on big sections that council mandate must be built to expensive and complex codes?
