      It's nothing new Davo.
Simply a vehicle for another rant.

It is from the article Maccachic posted 6 weeks ago.

Like the engineers, the lawyers are starting to warm up on this. There is money to be made!

We had a tenant talking about legal action if they do not renew the lease on a building which is earthquake prone! This is to claim for their fit-out costs and the business developed. Cannot see any grounds for this, but their lawyer has started 'advising' them.

I've been thinking a lot about how to solve the earthquake strengthening of commercial buildings problem.

Last night I was watching my 7 year old play when the answer hit me!

I've made some initial repairs using this technique and am waiting on the engineering calcs before I can state for sure that the solution is indeed the best available:

              timaru, waimate, surrounding areas

insurance costs set to climb again?

A civil defence report says there is a 65 per cent chance of the Alpine Fault rupturing in the next 50 years.

the fault could cause a magnitude 8 quake

The damage from such an event in the Mackenzie would be "catastrophic", and in Timaru and Waimate "major".

The Alpine Fault runs hundreds of kilometres along the western Alps from Marlborough to Milford Sound, where it heads offshore, and marks the Pacific and Australian plate boundary.

              have you defeated them?

eri, the insurance companies must love articles like that.

In fact, if one were cynical, one would wonder if they pay for them...

Still preferable to what was probably more reflective of our attitude to risk previously......

Its an over zealous safety approach which results in bringing up old buildings only to 35% of modern building standards...

As usual NZ Govt is without any "issue perspective" & steering huge financial encumberances for businesses which will ultimately cost all of us .

A another blow for business is that any earthquake strengthening costs are NOT tax deductible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The drive for this has come with blessing from one of NZ's most useless ministers Maurice Williamson.

5% at least I'd say eri.

The rest of the country should be 0%
