  • Rating Legislation Change

I have just received the following letter from the GWRC.

Other forum members may be interested in it.

    July 2005

A recent change to rating legislation now allows for owner/ratepayers names & postal addresses details to be included in a public rating information database.

Before owners/ratepayers’ names and postal addresses are available publicly Councils are required to contact you, as the ratepayer, to give you the opportunity to request to have your personal details withheld. This letter has been written on behalf of both Porirua City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council.

A database containing rating information, without names and addresses, for Porirua City Council is available and can be viewed on http://www.pcc.govt.nz/rates/

The database containing names and postal addresses will be able to be viewed after 30th November 2005 at the Council offices listed below; it will not be available over the internet to prevent bulk collection of the information.
    - Porirua City Council, 16 Cobham Court, Porirua City
    - Greater Wellington Regional Council, 142 Wakefield Street, Wellington and 34 Chapel Street, Masterton.

There are a number of situations where having your name and address available can be helpful to you. For example, if you live at a different address from your property and your neighbour wishes to contact you to discuss matters such as fencing or over hanging trees, or if someone is interested in purchasing your property and wishes to make an unsolicited offer to buy it, we will be unable to disclose you name and address if you have requested us to withhold this information.

You must apply in writing if you would like your name and postal address withheld from the database. If you own multiple properties for which you require your name and postal address excluded, you will need to provide details of each property. That is, each property’s Valuation Reference number and physical address. You may change your options at any time by simply writing to Council at the address below.

You should also note that, no matter whether you wish to have your name and postal address withheld or not, property owner details will still remain publicly available as per Certificate of Title through Land Information New Zealand.

The public rating information database is provided by Porirua City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council to enable members of the public to access rating information for themselves. The actual search is not something that is done by either Council on behalf of the public.
    Patience is a virtue.
