Lightbulb Top 20 Most Popular Threads on PT?

    Morning all,

Taking a lead from Monid's great thread - "My Favourite PropertyTalk Threads for New and Old Investors"

I was wondering if it might be a useful excercise to list the Top 20 Most Popular Threads on PT ? Maybe another good starting point for PT newbies?

    For example:

    1. Ron Hoy Fong - My Story (22,064 views 326 Replies)
    2. The Journey - Chris Ashenden (17,960 views 185 Replies)
    3. Ron Hoy Fong - Will The Next Boom Be The Boom Of All Booms? (14,423 views 220 Replies)
    4. etc
    5. etc

    Any value in this?

    Hello revdev,

Quite a good idea you have there.

On the same topic, a little thingy I often do is to look at the number of views and divide it (mentally) by the number of replies.

This ought to give an idea of the popularity of any given post.

You will find that early on the hit rate is high and that it drops down sharply the more views occur.

I believe as a rough guide there needs to be a minimum of about 40-50 viewings to get any sort of meaningful result.

    5% seems to indicate popularity.

I realise this is a very rough personal survey I am conducting and that it can be riddled with pitfalls.

For example, a post may be very useful and helpful, and thus will get many hits, but it may not require any response at all.

Also, a thread may be pretty useless but somehow one of these puerile slanging matches takes hold and the replies on that thread go up enormously. (Why people indulge in all that silliness is beyond me of course. Anybody would think they had nothing better to do with their time.)

    Just some thoughts.

    xris

PS/ As of now your thread is a (roughly) 16%-er (1/6).

That will drop quickly as more people view it

    Whitt,

A 2.61% -er according to my plan. But with a viewing of 2,631 that makes it quite a high percentage in my book, ie the higher the viewings the lower drops the percentage of replies posted. Normally I would expect a lower percentage with such a high viewing rate, so this thread of yours seems to be quite popular. But as I have said, this is only a numbers game with me anyway, with little real scientific weight behind it.

OK so using Xris formula for popularity It looks like at this stage the Trade me thread might make the top 20.

    Default The Top 20

    Hi everyone,

After a hunt through the forum over the last week this looks to be the 20 Most Popular Threads on PT..if I have missed any let me know.

    Observations?

Well, we obviously like a good success story as shown by the popularity of threads by RHF, NZGems, Superdad, Drelly etc. Throw in some RM controversy, the possibility of good deal, some good debates, the odd challenge and some handy hints.

Newbies, if you banged your way through these 20 threads you would have a good heads up of the industry - major players, a bit of history, turbulent waters and future thinking.

    Smile Update:

Thanks Monid, you will see that thread has slipped into the Top 20 at #16.

No less than 7 changes, (mostly through my initial errors I think!) but still no hiding from the fact that forumites love a good story or a good ding dong.

It must be said that 2 other threads would have made this list but are currently locked by the mods.

    1. Ron Hoy Fong - My Story
    2. The Journey - Chris Ashenden
    3. Ron Hoy Fong - Will The Next Boom Be The Boom Of All Booms?
    4. Interest Rate Rise or Drop
    5. Possible deals available
    6. My Journey to Financial Freedom and Beyond
    7. Xmas '06 challenge
    8. Don't believe you can't buy at a discount
    9. An open letter to Richmastery
    10. Beware of 'Falling Knives' in Aucklands CBD apartment market
    11. Anyone get a "gift subscription from a friend" to REI Mag?
    12. KPI finds a new owner
    13. Richmastery & Censorship
    14. Tips and Gems
    15. Richmastery courses
