When 2-month fixed-term lease on furnished property ends, tenants ask to stay on for a week or two longer as they haven't found another place yet. Tenants had the house at a greatly reduced rate because it was a short-term lease, which hurt landlord's pocket - but Landlord is a nice guy, reckons he can give tenants a break considering their situation, so says "OK, but only for 1 or 2 more weeks" - nothing is put in writing, it's all verbal. So many weeks go by yet tenants still there and landlord getting evasive answers to 'you were supposed to have moved out by now, what exactly is going on?'. Landlord wants tenants out, tenants have overstayed the date of their verbal agreement and landlord is now in financial trouble trying to cover mortgage because of extended period on reduced rental rate.
So where does landlord stand in eyes of the law? What can landlord do?
