Coronavirus: First-home buyers lose when tenant refuses to budge

As one of the would-be buyers observes: they won't be the only ones in such a position. The domino effect in the article is quite scary to read. Stoic efforts reported, but all compromise offers spurned by the tenant. Despite the bad law being expoited, name-and-shame seems apposite.

I wonder if any media has the gumption to bring such a matter to the attention of the W'gton Woodenheads? Especially Housing Munster Megan. I suspect socialist Cindy and co. would wave the debacle away - and just look the other way.

Stupid unjust laws. Passed by very stupid and biased politicians.

Obviously the tenant is better off in the short term but have they considered their long term accomaditions? Turning down two alternatives to remain as a thorn in their LL's side could prove an expensive decision 3 months down the line as their options disappear.

There may be more to it. I.e. A test case ("softening up") for the abrogation of private property rights by comrade socialist Cindy, et al.

It would be an unusual tenant that could look (or see) that far ahead.

Retired Homeowners Forced To Live In A Caravan

What's evident from the emails Stuff is getting is there are decent New Zealanders that are being given the cold shoulder. Where's the empathy and compassion for all New Zealanders?

Stuff's latest article on decent New Zealanders being done-over through no fault of their own. No assistance offered to these New Zealanders, and they have paid their taxes!

          1.
superannuitants, have been forced to live in a caravan over the winter because they cannot move into their own rental accommodation.
          2.
Mary (not her real name) served her tenant the required three-months notice in January to vacate the property in April, because it was no longer fit for purpose, and she had other plans for the site. Mary has been told the old villa must be brought up to the new standards required for rental accommodation (even though she had already given the 90 days notice - in January). In addition, she has been told she must pay the tenant $3500 for the "inconvenience of living in an unsatisfactory house over the winter".

          3. Tenant damages property, served 90 days, refuses to leave, also not paying rent arrears. LL can not get access to property for 8 months!

          cheers,

          Donna

                Lol.
Why do I just see Homer Simpson saying that.

I'd be most annoyed with their lawyer.
They obviously knew of the possible issues in taking over an occupied building.
They proceeded on his hollow assurances.

Unfortunately, for commie-socialist Cindy and her sycophantic cronies and puppets, being a LL revokes one's right to be called a "decent" citizen. Further, the W'gton woodenheads will reason that such people are not likely to vote for them. (Even less likely, now.)

If there's enough of these stories appearing in the media, such people might be thrown a few crumbs as a token gesture. Here's another one . . .

Homeowner paying $1250 a week rent because tenants won't leave his house

Shawani, his wife Wahaj and children Sarah, Adam and May, have been living in a serviced apartment since March, paying $1250 a week – because the tenants in the Botany Downs home they own cannot be forced to leave until at least June 26.
I wonder if the gNat's shadow housing minister will raise the matter, at all?

Most if not all of those impacted took the correct actions before anyone knew there was an issue. Then were blindsided by government action with no warning so are justifiably annoyed to put it politely.

Tenants though were also impacted as they were pretty much unable to shift and were arguably in a more vulnerable situation.

On balance I think the government did more or less the right thing given the macro decisions they made. But if rental terminations are extended past 25 June that will be a whole other story.

Rental termination does extend past 25 June as that is the earliest date you can issue notice - of 90 days so add on another 3 months.

Kiwis rate 'fairness' highly and no-one would agree that these people have been treated equally or fairly.

The 'we're in this together' is so far from the truth and they need to be outed for their prejudice.

Disagree with they're got it right - all they needed to do is assist LLs suffering from the enforced law, just like they are happy to assist everyone else.

                      cheers,

                      Donna

                        Reading between the lines...

I wonder if the previous landlord sold at a lower price because they knew the insulation would be an issue.
And also knew the disposition of the current tenant.

No media mouse is going to be brave enough to question socialist Cindy on this very matter.

                          Totally agree.

Also totally believe it's not going to happen.
