  • Heads Should Roll - A Conundrum

What you say touches on a latent problem with gummint service personnel. (local & national gummint). They can make some really bad and/or really expensive mistakes and there are no consequences, aside perhaps from reduced promotion options. I.e. Unless they actually do something dishonest, they're untouchable - on a life time sinecure.

But if - as part of their terms and conditions of employment - they had to bear some significant cost-responsibility for any stupid and/or really expensive mistakes, who would take the job on?

Did I miss something - so far they haven't transmitted it to anyone else (remember I did say 'so far').

Given Aus still has community transmission I can't see us having cases at the border having a bearing on a transtasman bubble - would we really want Aussies coming in until they get 0 community transmission?
Maybe 'create' is ambiguous - we had zero cases for 24 days and now we have 2 and maybe more (created) due to the slack process and allowing the infected to come into contact with others.

        .
We have 2 cases but not due to slack processes.
We potentially have more due to slack processes but at this stage none have been found so none created.
People say this all the time as if anything other than not let people in will stop new cases at the border.
Testing negative before they leave the far away land would help but that won't stop all either.
WE WILL HAVE MORE CASES AT THE BORDER.

As soon as they left isolation and entered our population they became "ours".

          Totally due to slack processes.

Anyone know if councils could avail themselves of the wage subsidy payments offered to businesses, during the lock-down?

                        Econ-o-mist-speak

Gobbledegook or plain BS? You decide.

New Zealand Institute of Economic Research principal economist Christina Leung says that uncertainty over incomes will weigh on spending over the long term and policy solutions needed to be targeted at building longer-term capabilities, she said. "What we want for the economy to be able to pivot to new opportunities, so policy needs to create an environment where the workforce and resources as a whole, can adapt to changing circumstances," Leung said.

"We want for" = execrable USAnglish.

I dont see how they could, as it requires a substantial drop from last years income to qualify.

Yup, the language is a bit impenetrable for the man on the street.
I usually try and simplify it first.

                            point 1.
People save money if they think a rainy day might be ahead.
                            true.

                            point 2.
                            Plan ahead.
                            true.

                            point 3.
Being adaptable is good in a changing situation.
                            true.

What she seems to be saying is captured by this old saying.
Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.

                            Missing the obvious flaw.
If the poor chap is too weak from starvation, and the fish are not biting this week, you just might need to give him a fish to get him to the next week.

And if you make him a net, and build him a boat, and figure out the best fishing spots for him, will you be accused of being a nanny state?
And if he over fishes an area and you limit the catch, will you be accused of being a Fascist state.

                            People huh .
                            Go figure.

                            • In Wellington some council controlled / associated organisations have received the wage subsidy. Zealandia for example received nearly $400k from the first tranche. (That was an OIA request via fyi.org.nz.)

That brings to mind another old saying.
