Default Auckland's population dropped by 77.5K in 2019

So Auckland's population is decreasing - down 77500 in last 12 months! Where have all these people gone? Are they still in NZ or have they emigrated?

This statistic came from a Salvation Army report - in NZH. So now AKL has a surprise of homes - 7168 to be exact according to the same news item.

Across NZ, unemployment is down and GDP is up (2.7%).

Could it be a trick of eligibility and not qualifying to be counted in the right category? There was that motel story on the news the other day where people living in the motel weren't "homeless" and because they didn't have homes they weren't "residents" either. They had just vanished off the list of statistics designed to keep track of such people.

I didn't see the article but Statistics has an official definition of homelessness. While it looks sort of scientific, it is not apples v apples with other countries' definitions. Like including those temporarily sharing a household. So we look worse than we probably are. Good for politicians.

Why would you trust statistics created like opinion polls. For reliable figures - are people registered at their place of residence, do they have an own letterbox, etc?
You can match the number to rate payers, but how would you be able to count people in living arrangement, emergency and temporary housing, flatting and hiding in cars, etc?
That is not only a problem for reliable stats but also for enforcing claims against illusive or transitional people.

Yea... something wrong with the way they counted.

    About 1.4 mil in 2016.
    Then 1.57 mil in 2018.
Now it must be about 1.6 mil.

Although the birth rate always slows as countries become more developed.
    and slows by a lot.
so the rate of growth now is less than a quarter of what it was in the 70's

It's almost as if city people self regulate their population to the resources.
