Default Consumer Guarantees Rights & Inferior Workmanship

    Hi there,
We had a builder install a shower a few years ago when we re-did a bathroom in a rental property.
He made so many mistakes that it's just not funny. Water has been leaking unbeknown to us until the damage became apparent.
He doesn't want to know about it or rectify the situation.
What are our rights? Does the CGA apply? Surely these cowboys are still accountable for shoddy workmanship and don't get off scot-free?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Hi crfchick,

A plumber, not a builder for this type of work is my first thought and as mentioned in your other post we did use a plumber and they are regulated and need to provide a certificate of workmanship and compliance.

    cheers,

    Donna

No, it was a simple corner shower, nothing fancy. There are even areas that were not siliconed at all... Simple lack of experience I believe.

If you can’t address the real problems like missing water membrane, leaking pipes, wrongly installed fittings, etc - you will have some problems…

We have built a number of bathrooms, showers, en-suites – we do the plan, builder does construction work, plumber the piping, and we finishing up the job –
you only get what you want if you know what you want!

Might be odd but the plumber did a lot of the work including installing the shower base of a corner shower in our main bathroom. He wanted it done well so he did it himself.

We've just had our house rebuilt and the plumber was brilliant. Everything was done well and he had great suggestions.

The electrician was average at best, including placing the power switch and meter in a bedroom! Plus we're still having issues with switches around the wrong way (up for on, down for off) some switches not doing anything, v. noisy extractor fan and no heated tiles. He has had his child doing some wiring of switches during the holidays which has been counterproductive as he's had to replace most of them.

The builders were great at construction, and anything building related but not the small stuff. E.g. couldn't put on a door catch straight or line the two parts up. Didn't think it necessary to test so none work.

    cheers,

    Donna
