    Default Car Port on Boundary - as per link below

    Looking at putting in a carport on the boundary to keep a boat dry.
    Basically just 3 poles and a roof.
    How close can you build this to the boundary.

    Please note that I am talking about whether this structure needs a consent or not, as it will be temporary and I refuse to ever in my life deal with council again.
    I just want to know how close to the boundary and how high I can build it.

    You may (quite understandably) not want to deal with the council bastions of bureaucracy, but is you put up a permanent structure like a carport, the council may deal with / to you.

    Locally, I see people putting in poles and putting up suitable 'shade sails' as a way of avoiding the red tape nightmare and still getting a car or boatport.

    Generally 1m clearance to the boundary. This is to avoid building a fire rated wall.
    Even if it is a temporary structure it still needs to comply with building regs.

    Assuming a flat site. On a residential site height is usually 2m + distance to boundary: therefore 3m max height at 1m from bdy.

    no consent required for a carport under 20m2

    all work has to comply with building code

    Fire clauses need compliance

    the acceptable solution for fire CAS1 at 5.5 allows for an open structure (carport open 2 sides) roof able to be 300 from bdy and no fire wall required

    That's great, no consent then, as I will build it 19.5m2 - 3m by 6.5m will cover my boat.

    With zero walls, just 2 poles.

    Build it right by the fence and existing boundary.

    And I can be 3m high right from the boundary.

    you have to satisfy planning regs, these are different for every area. i was only considering building consent.

    usually if you have neighbour's approval anything is possible in terms of closeness to boundary and height, Building coverage could be an issue?

    20m2 is the floor area which could be said to be area within poles?

    No neighbours consent.

    Coverage of site definitely not an issue.

    Yep floor area will be the roof size as only 2 poles (which form 2 of the points)

    the poles are inside the roofline? so the floor area is less (or your 20m2 floor afrea allows more roof?

    you need to check planning as building in side yards (1.2.m from bdy??) usually need planning approval (or go ahead and take the risk knowing building consent is not required?

    We're in our rental at the mo. renovating it before we rent it out again. I see our neighbour, put up a carport that's right on the boundary, and this was done a few years back I found out from another neighbour.

    The roof slopes downwards to boundary fence but is not touching it. Definitely can't be legal though as it's not even 30 cm from the boundary. The house sold a couple of years ago too, with it like that. Must be really common and clearly doesn't bother purchasers. The carport would have added value to it.
