The right way to run HRV ducting to downstairs

Anyone know what is the right way to run the HRV ducting to downstairs of two storey house. The way it is run in the photo is very ugly and waste of space.

I'm putting ducting in as I do a remodel. I wanted to wait a year because I'm over budget but basically it needs to be built in or look ugly as you mentioned.

This is why I've mentioned unovent in another thread.
You can mount it in the wall of a downstairs room and not need any ducting through floors and down walls.
A more elegant solution in my opinion.

Better if boxing is right in the corner, but in any case it will look OK once painted to match the walls.
