The European Union has been asked to waive diplomatic immunity for a diplomat owing Wellington landlords $20,000. The issue comes down to a $1500-per-week house Delegation of the European Union deputy chief of mission Eva Tvarozkova rented in the hills above Wellington Harbour but moved out of early with unpaid rent and some damage to the house. But the Tenancy Tribunal case has become entangled in international law because Tvarozkova has diplomatic immunity, which includes immunity from the Tenancy Tribunal.
Was an article on the radio (so it must be true) that Canada had a similar situation and the court there ruled that the Diplomatic Immunity did not extend to commercial activities and that renting was such an activity.
The landlord in the Canadian case, Rolf Baumann, said he took the diplomat to court because he had experienced a growing trend of foreign diplomats skipping out on their rent.
"What this means is that there are mechanisms for anybody that's going to enter into a contractual obligation with a diplomat …
to be able to have it enforced and supported by the Canadians laws," he told The Globe and Mail.
"I don't necessarily see it as a win. I see it more as a public-awareness exercise."
My existing list of tenant applicants who I decline immediately, which consists of:

- anyone who drives an Audi
- anyone who uses a first name ending with i
now includes a 4th entry:
- anyone who is a diplomat from an overseas country.
