Want to rent an apartment in melbourne

I am going to go to Melbourne to start College study in next year. Now, I'm worry about accommodation when come there if I wont be received by College Campus for student. Is it better if I rent an apartment or a small house? I don't know how much for a rent apartment/house there.

I want to learn more about this before coming there.
