Kiwi couple denied home based on race and marital status

A couple have lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission after being denied a rental property based on race and marital status.

An Auckland couple aged in their 30s, who wished not to be named, thought they'd hit the jackpot when they came across a two-bedroom house in the east Auckland suburb of Highland Park last week.
A property manager ran two viewings and took the couple's application, as the owners were based in China.

The female applicant said she thought they were in with a good shot of securing the home so she was shocked to receive a call from the agent on Friday saying their application had not been successful "because we weren't Asian or Chinese".

A Kiwi couple were denied a rental property on the basis they weren't Asian and are unwed.

That property manager is not fit for purpose.

Agreed with Artemis. Inexperience is no excuse, and if so should never have been put in front of the media to dig an even deeper hole.

Trial by media, HRC or TT? Lots of options.

Wonder if the PM was attached to a REA.

        Good contribution from Peter, too.

No matter how true and how good the advice is, I wonder if the statement below will be 'pounced on' by the loony lefty socialists, demanding ever more RTA amendments?

He also recommended that landlords or property managers didn't give a reason when declining potential tenants. "You are perfectly entitled not to give a reason, and we strongly advise you don't because if you give a reason then you are asking for an argument," he said. "What I normally just say is that the application has been unsuccessful."

The same landlords who have no issue with the above would scream bloody murder if they were declined by their bank, on the same grounds, when asking for a loan to buy their next investment property.

The above situation has a simple fix, one which the current government is dealing with, and that is to ban non-residents from buying existing property. They have clearly forgotten they are not in China and they should either assimilate to our way or go back to China.

Unfortunately, their attitude is too common. They were spoiled, entitled and racist back in their native country and they bring their bull**** here.

Then consider it the cost of keeping the proletariat from revolting and chopping off your heads.

An absolutely fair question to ask. Curry smell ruins a property. And sorry if this sounds racist, but from previous experience, I will do my best to avoid renting my properties to people from India and Indonesia (even third gen Kiwis); ONLY because of the damage caused by the smell of curry, not because of their ethnicity per se.

I've heard all the stories about ozone machines, commercial cleaning, carpet cleaning etc at the end of the tenancy but it's all bollocks, they don't work.

Agreed it is a fair question to ask - 'cooking smells'. We've got Indian tenants and they're fastidious so our rental is in good nick - however due to a job relocation they're leaving which is a shame as they've been really good.

PM has new tenants coming in - don't know where they're from and not sure it's a question I'd be comfortable asking even if I wanted to.

                cheers,

                Donna

Many landlords say no Indians because of smell. They just don't say it publicly.

How would you frame a question to ascertain that cooking proclivity in a pre-tenancy application?

That's my point. You'd have to be brave to insert a clause preventing the cooking of curry in a TA.
That's why it's best to just avoid tenanants that you belive will cook curries.

Well I can tell you that the smell is no big deal.
Use the right products and it is gone.

Caress from Supreme Cleaning Products in Tauranga will do the job.
Spray around liberally over 3 or 4 days and leave the house shut.

Great for sorts of smells. Used it for years.
They do have agents all around the country.
