Default State house tenants to be allowed pets

Dog control is going to be a growth industry. Our local one does a really good job at present but with this new initiative, they will have their hands full.

Bet Housing NZ is well pleased. Not.

I hope they are given wide powers to seize and rehome or put to sleep, with costs borne by the tenant.

    Not holding my breath.

Housing Minister Phil Twyford should ask those pets if they wanted to be allowed in state house?
Housing Minister Phil Twyford should ask
taxpayers if they wanted to pay for the additional pets related damage? Obviously insurance won't cover it.

Politicians don't ask taxpayers what they want because those self-same woodenheads tell taxpayers what they want. Or think they want.

State housing is self insured, so no external insurance. Perhaps the Minister is not aware of multiple Tenancy Tribunal decisions that tenants are not responsible for damage from allowed pets. So, yes, taxpayer pays. And that will be in addition to the $815 million taxpayers already pay for state house rent subsidies, not to mention other operational costs.

I hope Housing NZ and the Councils keep track of the extra work monitoring compliance with the rules around pets and the extra costs they will face. Costs will not be trivial.

That was its called representative democracy- you vote for muppets to make your mind up for you. It's a truly great system... or is it?

A 95-year-old man whose dog was killed in an attack has been mauled by a dog for a third time near his Northland home.
