Does anyone know of or could recommend an accountant based in Sydney?

Wife and I have just been relocated to Sydney for my job. I have a 3 beddy rental back in S. Auckland and would like to catch up with an accountant who is familiar with taxes for Kiwi property investors living and working in Aus. thanks, Nick

Afraid my network doesn't extend to Sydney, but do consider whether you need a trans-tasman accountant, or if a NZ-based one would do. I often recommend clients to have both a NZ and an Australian accountant, it can be cheaper than getting one who specialises in both countries' law.

You'll need to file a tax return in New Zealand, and will likely be required to declare this income in Australia. A NZ accountant can help with the former, and a discussion with a decent AUS accountant can do the latter. Alternatively, you can do one or both yourself, if you're comfortable with either country's requirements.

Are you an Dual/AU Citizen? If so you will need to declare your rental income and pay tax on it here as well. Otherwise you are classed as a "temporary resident". Got some advice from these guys (Melb based) http://www.beyondaccountancy.com.au/...needs-to-know/

I use this guy in Syndey http://taxbythebeach.com.au/

As I mentioned above I'm not by any means a master of Australian tax law, but to my knowledge citizenship is irrelevant (or at least, a very small consideration) in the tax residency legislation. In terms of NZ; entirely possible to be tax resident in New Zealand without being a citizen, and plenty of citizens are not tax residents.

It may be worth talking to one of the bigger companies, at least for the first year.

When I moved to Sydney, work paid for PWC to file my first year returns. I feel like it was valuable; as a Kiwi on a Special Category Visa I was deemed a temporary visitor which apparently has its tax advantages re overseas income, capital gains and even fringe benefits. Plus just general Aussie tax info (i.e. my part time masters is tax deductible).

Never let a big firm near your accounts unless you have the scale. They hay have been helpful for HOID if the tax affairs are relatively straight forward but if they're complicated you might be in trouble. They will pass you onto the intern to do the work, a level up manager will look over it and sign off as fast as possible then move on. To get the level of expertise you expect from a big firm you will pay HUGE dollars.

The Aus tax system has hooks that could impact you long term. Get good advice...

Australia taxes on world wide income and how you set up initially has a big impact if you decide to leave Aus. There are situations where you may be required to pay capital gains tax on an asset you held in Australia that appreciated in AUD terms for the period you were living there as you leave. This is payable EVEN if there was no gain in NZD terms and even if you didn't sell the asset.
