Because some people like to hunt? - Perhaps such people can curtail their urge to kill.
And their urge to eat meat? The satisfaction of eating a steak or roast you've caught, cleaned and cooked yourself is unbeatable. It's as kiwi as home brew and beach cricket. But the privilege of gun ownership needs stricter policing.
The need for simiautomatic assault rifles and pistols in public hands is completely unnecessary. Make them inoperable trophies only.
That doesn't answer my questions.
Why allow guns?
It's our right to have guns? - Perhaps that should change.
I totally agree, I would prefer if guns were banned from any city or town.
Farms need them as stock management tools (I have been told)... so maybe a short range, small caliber tool could be sold.
Full disclosure, as a youth I enjoyed many happy hours target shooting and playing war.
Had New Zealand ever gone to war, I would have been very comfortable with a gun and quite useful as a long range hitter.
That skill would have been difficult to acquire in the short time that usually leads up to war.
(And I think soldiers like Lord Nelson and King Harold, could vouch for the effectiveness of snipers in battle).
Paintball was far more useful in training for block by block combat, which is where I see guns being of most military use.
(although I think you should be out of the game for the rest of the week if you are hit...none of this " go back to base" rubbish.)
Had it not been for cowboy, detective, war and spy films, I probably would have had nothing to emulate.
Get rid of the films and games too I say.
(California makes all that money exporting and normalising gun glamour to the rest of the civilised world, we need to shift the social cost back there somehow.)
Now that we have nukes and drones, guns are a bit yesterday anyway.
* and remember folks, never pick up, put down, hand over or take a gun, until the breach is presented as empty. Develop this as a go to habit.
