  • Asbestos removal costs

I have a 2 bedroom unit that I am renovating, just wanting to know what I should expect to pay to have the ceiling removed of the popcorn effect. It has been tested and it cam back with asbestos. Has anyone had it done recently.

    The unit is about 70sqm.

    Thanks
    FH

We had the same issue - 50 sq m lounge with popcorn cathedral ceiling was about $6k - quoted by Kowhai Asbestos Removal and was by far the cheaper option than other asbestos companies. When the guy came to do the quote he told they were not actually going to remove it as it was painted over - they were going to plaster it over instead. They would still have to follow some strict H&S process and that why it was still expensive.

In the end we instead opted for getting to install a GIB over the old ceiling with new insulation in between the old ceiling and the GIB. It was about the same price but we also got installed the new LED lights and insulation.

I think I would rather have it removed, out ceiling is also painted over.

I was told by asbestos removal people who came to see the job that they can't remove it if is painted over. Otherwise we would probably get it removed too

The fact it is painted is not the reason it can't be removed. In fact many asbestos removal guys use paint to capture the fibers before removal.

FH you can remove up to 10m2 (I think) yourself. It is not unsafe to do so if you follow precautions and common sense. However if it is a ceiling it may be a bit more challenging and you might want the pros to do it.

Do you have some sort of external reference to that?

something to remember for next time Decramastic tiles have been found to have asbestos in them so now cant be dumped willy nilly (unless its dark and no one is about)

this link to a govt website doesn't reference how much you're allowed to remove but does provide guidelines on how to remove asbestos yourself - by providing this information it is inferring you're allowed to remove it.

Looks to me that you can remove any amount you want rather than just 10sqm.

You might be right. Not sure where I got 10m2 it might have evolved from thinking I can remove small amounts without too much issue.

I am building a minor dwelling behind a property i own and an excavator operator found sheets of Asbestos under the ground, has just cost a mind blasting $18K to have it professionally cleaned.

I'm still feeling kinda dizzy at the thought of IT.
