Maybe this is WINZ actually trying to save money. By getting an expensive hotel stay turned into a more permanent regular tenancy. And they're unaware of the law - wouldn't be the first time.
Glenn, couldn't you perhaps point out the law in this area and maybe still go ahead - but with 4 weeks bond?

So I say and WINZ has clearly also figured that the current law is not workable. We need a change. Change comes two ways. With reasoned arguments or out of the barrel of a gun.
Politicians are the only ones who can change the law. They change the law after lots of careful consideration or when they are desperate.
The more letters being issued by WINZ like my one, the more people foolishly being housed in motels, the more people sleeping in hallways, the more people jamming the waiting lists the more urgent and more obvious the answer becomes. But do not blame me for being the messenger.

Is there any relation between HNZ tenancies being terminated due to Meth contamination and the vast increase in spending on emergency hotel housing?
I suspect there is.

Ouch!

Isn't that about as likely as the TT ordering the tenant's Mum to pay up because she promised her little Johnny was a good boy?DFTBA

I have not got a 50% strike rate. Like nil nil nil is all I have ever got. Statements like "yes I can see the RTA says this and that but if there is a problem you can come back to this court and I will make a decision then based on the facts" I can not remember all the variants but one I do recall relates to a clause that permits a shorter notice period to be given if both the landlord and tenant agree at the start of the tenancy and the tribunal authorizes it.
The condition was if the mad man over populated his one bedroom flat like he did in the past. I had housed him after pleads from the mental health people when the tenant got out of jail. The tenant lost it in court and assaulted me in front of the adjudicator. But I did not get the authority. Surprise a month or two later he had extras in the flat so I had to issue a 90 day notice rather than the requested 21 days.
Landlords have to understand we are not a protected species even if we are endangered. Endangered of dying out due to lack of rent, lack of public support, and smashed up properties and no one is held accountable.
