In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires, a workplace—
    (a)
means a place where work is being carried out, or is customarily carried out, for a business or undertaking; and
    (b)
includes any place where a worker goes, or is likely to be, while at work.

Not relevant to rentals for accommodation.

    Commercial leases? Yes.
Totally relivant to Property Managers/Landlords. After all, they do call in to do inspections on a regular basis, or should do so.

So every home owner will need to get a test done and certification before a tradie can come round?

'Workers' are employed by employers who are responsible for H&S not the customers/clients.

      • ^^ Home owner has controll over the property. Property manager/landlord does not.

I was thinking the same. In fact, I was talking to a locksmith the other day who said that they often go into homes where they know there is meth. He even said he was in one house where they are smoking it in front of him while he was changing the locks!

          • drug testing of prospective tenants?

would hair be best as it can show up to 90 days ?

Yes, meth shows up on most urine-based test 2-3 days after use (longer for chronic or high dose users). More on types of meth testing and its detection window

or just test the most likely users, beneficiaries

            or simply avoid them?

            • Another article:

As Kiwi homeowners spend millions each year fixing P-contaminated houses, a drug detection expert has opened up on how to spot one in your neighbourhood.

I'm about to go property-shopping in low socio-economic areas and it's making me wonder if I should include it as part of my due diligence.
Would those kits be good for that?

                • Well, I think we're on to something, here. If the indications
are that LLs and PM are going to possibly get nailed if any
tenancy shows drug contamination, the NZPIF might just
do something other than talk (for a change) and tell those
in power that the NZPIF will be recommending drug tests
                  for all tenant applicants.

Might get a reaction or two from the do-gooders.

Oh, no! Couldn't trample on the poor, downtrodden tenants' civil liberties/dignity like that! Why, that reeks even more of imperialism, having to already go cap-in-hand to the greedy, imperialistic landlord for a roof over their wretched heads, that is.

                    • Naaaahh - just look on it as another facet of the law
of unintended consequences, so beloved of the loony,
                      do-gooder, liberal set.

Have you ever had any positive results and therefore proof that they work?

                          • No. I treat it as "presumptive testing"

Something like the drunk drive roadside test. If it pops up positive I would discuss it with the owner to get an evidential test done.

Roughly what is the price on these?
I gather they immediately show a result rather than get sent away to Hills Lab or some such?
