$30.00 an hour doesn't buy a whole lot of effort and energy these days.
Well done cleaning is a hard days work which you should know if you have done a lot of cleaning.
So, I would rather pay someone a higher rate and know they work their buts off than hire the useless who swing the lead and overcharge you.
Of course you can always get a price first.
not only did they massively overcharge me, they didn't even do the outdoor tasks I set. Result was the paying guests leaving and me losing money.
I've now gone with the lower-charging one who is at least doing what he's supposed to.
The cleaning company has just sent their bill.

I paid about $350 for a 98m2 3 bed, took 3 people 3.5 hours.

Hmmm, yours was a little more than a third of mine, while mine was about 3/4 of the size. As I had been cleaning as I went along, there also wasn't the dust that yours had.
On a related note, the handyman is now chasing me for payment. Is it reasonable for me to want to see the work before I pay, even if it means making him wait another week or so until I get down there? He took on the work knowing I lived three hours away and I was due to get paying guests in (which would logically 'block out' some weekends so that I'd be unable to inspect.)

If he has done the work you asked it isn't reasonable to make him wait for payment.
Inspecting is your issue I would have thought.

I agree with Wayne. You can't withhold payment because you want to inspect and it hasn't been convenient for you to get there to inspect. You should pay in a reasonable timeframe the fact you haven't inspected is not their problem. I always agree payment terms in advance and pay on time that way I know my trades will be responsive when I call to ask them to do work. I find with tradies A good payer will always get a better quality of work and priority.

I get what you're saying. There was no discussion of payment terms. What would you consider a reasonable time frame?
As for keeping him sweet - I will never be using this guy again! Rough as guts, slow as a wet week and massively overcharging! (Which is why I want to inspect his work.)
Not really relevant, but he is a retired man and has not sent a proper invoice - just an email with a $ amount and a bank acct. number, so I'm starting to wonder if he declares it.
You could request an itemised invoice (and a GST number).
If you can find him online, reviews are an option.
And when all is settled, dob him in to the IRD using this invoice / proof of payment.
He might not be part of the $20B plus black economy but I wouldn't put $ on it..

He got my goat up because he was blustering about adding a 10% late fee, getting the debt collectors involved and affecting my credit rating etc. For a non-existent invoice and a non-existent contract! The work was only done 2-3 weeks ago!

i pay 100% of invoice on day the work is completed unless I have agreed payment terms in advance but I'm always there to check the work or have someone I trust do it for me. Although if you're not happy with the quality of work or attitude etc and you're not planning to use them again then you don't have to worry about that part of it.
as far as declaring income it's not really your concern as long as you get a receipt for work done. If he chooses to run the gauntlet with the IRD that's his choice and risk.

Yes it is his choice and risk. And part of that risk is someone letting IRD know there might be something to investigate.
As a taxpayer, I prefer those receiving income declare it to the IRD.

$30 ph is cheap for a handyman. Just saying.
right... There is a hotline to IRD you can call should you want to. Not declaring income is a very risky game, my accountant tells me when the IRD come knocking you're guilty until you prove your innocence
