Well that's because immigrants are getting paid three times.
Once but the employer.
Once by the local people whose taxes and good will have built the parks and roads and law and honesty...etc.
And once by the other current workers who must face a pay reduction and a reduction in the ease of movement and access to goods and health services etc.

a local person is only paid once, because his parents, grandparents etc and his own taxes have already bought the other two things.

Effectively, the group known employers is privatizing their gain and socialising the costs. That's a popular phrase to capture the idea.

if i had to choose one of your options, it's that it's not a zero sum game... but i'd like to see your answer to ERI's comment - would you be ok with paying immigrants 1/3 of the local wage?

Ha. Bad math, I said they were paid three times, not three equal times.
It would be an interesting exercise to calculate the value of new Zealand citizenship in terms of standard of living,
Although value is infinatly variable depending upon the point of context.
An American citizen might be loosing something while an Immigrant from a war zone might be gaining.
I'm thinking I might target the employer, especially if it was an international corporate , milking nz and dodging tax and wages by whatever means it could.
Basically, a case by case basis.

Amazed at how some people see immigrants as refugees...amazed how people forget that their ancestors in this country were immigrants...
In the town where I live 5 out of 7 GPs, 5 of 6 dentists are immigrants.... still people have to wait for appointments...wonder if there were no immigrants
