      A lot of European cities date from the Middle Ages. They typically grew up around ports, fishing areas, crossroads and fords. Earlier settlements often grew up around Roman army camps.
      In newer countries the pattern is different. It's no accident that the traditional four main centres are all on the coast, as are the majority of our larger towns.

        Don't forget the presence of a river. Or rivers. Their mouths often formed semi-natural ports.
