    Hi Guys

Here is a novel way to save petrol.

Overdue fines? We'll help you save on petrol
    15.08.2005

    By KRISTIN MacFARLANE
Here's a novel way to save money on petrol - don't pay your fines.

Before you know it, someone will be clamping your car, and you won't be going anywhere.

Already 16 people with unpaid fines have lost the use of their vehicles since a crackdown on Rotorua fines defaulters began two weeks ago.

Three bailiffs have been visiting homes and randomly checking car registration plates to see if the owners are fine defaulters.

Those who fit the bill - but haven't paid their money - have had their wheels clamped.

The vehicles belong to people who owe money for fines ranging from $100 to more than $27,000.

The fines were issued for a range of misdemeanours including speeding and parking infringements, through to criminal offences.

District collections manager Ken Runciman, who is in charge of the Rotorua, Taupo and Tokoroa areas, said wheel-clamping was a way to make people realise how important it was to pay their fines.

"We're making a particular focus on trying to ensure that fine defaulters are making arrangements to pay their fines," Mr Runciman said.

Parking tickets were much easier to pay when they were $10, rather than leaving it until their cars were wheel-clamped which resulted in a $140 cost.

"Fines don't go away," he said.

Mr Runciman promised the clampdown on fines defaulters would continue throughout the region.
