  • Warning - Parmco ovens and spare parts

I recently bought a new Palmco oven.

It is a great oven operationally wise except their quality control leaves a bit to be desired.

One of the feet did not screw in properly and a screw was lost in the recesses of the oven while changing the jets from NG to LPG.

No big deal I thought. I will contact the shop (who supplied the stove) and get them to courier me the parts which will work out easiest for both of us.

Here is where things get really crappy.

I was sent a diagram of the stove and they insisted to know which parts I wanted. Unfortunately, I can't find this screw documented on the spare parts list. It only covers the large parts. They asked for a photo and I sent it through.

After not hearing from them for awhile I followed them up and it transpires they will not supply the spare parts until I can tell them what their (non-existent as far as I can see) spare part code is.

This is despite the very clear photo showing the screw and it's location and the fact this very screw is mentioned in the instruction manual, because 2 of them hold the bottom burner cover in place which has to be removed to swap the jets.

I have concluded they are basically just dicking me around and they have no intention of supplying the parts.

I did notice another quality issue with the oven (loose screw on the back which would not tighten) but it was minor so I overlooked it as not being worth the hassle.

Cooking wise it's a great oven but from my own experience and what I have heard from others - a pretty poor company to deal with.

    Notes:

    1. I would rather they have supplied the screw then I have to go into the hardware company in Palmerston North and ask for one stainless screw. I know from previous experience small stainless parts (except stuff used in dairy equipment) are in short supply in our local town.

    2. They haven't even sent me the foot either.

We have a lot of their gear in houses, quality is average but service is pretty good in Auckland

        My Palmco oven caught fire.
The call centre support person didn't sound surprised and dispatched the replacement parts quite quickly.
I think they were familiar with this fault.
They also included a few extra upgrade parts for free.
By reading between the lines - there must be 3 or 4 known faults and when an oven plays up, they replace all those faulty bits at once.
Why don't they do that before they sell them?

When I bought the oven, the retailer (a major company) insisted on unboxing it there and I should sign saying it was in good condition.

Between your post and that - I am starting to get a clear picture here.

PS: The only reason I bought the Palmco was it was one of only 2 brands which had a model with gas for oven and cooktop.

Our Parmco (note different spelling, assuming it's the same brand) oven has had a couple issues. The gas nozzle melted itself shut, repairman came and fixed it no problem with no cost if I recall right. The oven door also spontaneously shattered while being opened (safety glass) and on calling their service company they sent through the new door extremely quickly, but couldn't get the repair guy to fit it for us for eight days so we did it ourselves.

In both instances we had no proof of purchase or warranty, but told them the house was less than 3 years old and it was installed by the builder. Took us at our word and didn't charge.

So I experienced good service, but got the impression this stuff happens all the time.

I have been using Parmco supplied by nation wide hardware supplier for about the last 12 years or so in all our rentals, and have yet to have any servicing issues, good or bad ! Thats a fairly routine 1 installation per year, so I'm pretty happy with them, and would just replace any of the earlier units if they failed.

Small parts supply for any such device are similarly hard to obtain, like any manufacturer they stock the parts that fail, not the ones that might get lost. I would suggest that you just go buy a packet of SS screws locally.

As far as I am aware they are the only ones offering a 5 year warranty. If there was a problem why didn't you call them?
I had them out the other day as our grill hasn't worked for ages, hardly use it so hadn't worried about it.
Serviceman came, was out of warranty charged me $60. Happy as a sand boy.
I would have Parmco over Smeg, Westinghouse, Bosch, maybe not F & P but for a rental a 5 year warranty is good.

I have a 5 year old parmco double wall oven. The small top door glass panel exploded when I opened it to remove something. Not a fun experience.
That model was replaced 2 years ago and parmco no longer stock any parts which is unfortunate.
It seems so wasteful throwing a perfectly good oven away. Does anyone know of a solution? I have tried appliance repairers and glaziers but no luck. Spare door anyone?

Might find the same model on Trademe to cannibalise, maybe even a cheapie. Or a Facebook request?

I had a similar issue with a glass cooktop recently, just out of warranty and Parmco says parts no longer available. Good reason to avoid el-cheapo brands I guess.
