Yeasterday we spoke to farmer friends who suggested buying rural land and leasing it back to farmers. Any pros and cons to this idea from experince or theory? Evidently you can live in the farm house and enjoy the country life without the work and make a reasonable income.

Lease option
I currently do this myself.
Things to be careful of are - Make sure u choose the right person to lease, or they will abuse and use your land. Get a contract draw up if u do not know them stating yearly fertilizer expectations etc..
There is very little money in leasing (Down my way anyhow, typically 3.5%p.a) but it can be a useful tax write-off. This is a lifestyle option, not an investment (Unless u can subdivide?)
Good luck
