  • NZ is Barely Functioning, Literally.
    16 June 2018

"I remember people being spooked about new health and safety legislation and I would go along to a workshop and the first person to pick up the mike would say, 'well, of course the real issue is literacy and numeracy', and everyone would nod."

"NCEA has drifted away from the core concepts that you still must be literate and numerate," he says. "They are getting unit standards for soft skills, not hard skills, so 'I'm finding it too difficult to do mathematics so I'll do environmental studies or I'll do something else', and they get the cross-credits so they have a capacity to learn, but they don't really have the core literacy and numeracy skills that you must have to work in an operational environment."

    • Sizzling Sausages & Onions @ Bunnings!

      Whatever happened to critrical thinking?

It died and was buried along with common sense.

OSH was on the undertakers shovels, in gloves, safety specs., hard hats, hi-vis vests, ear-protection, safety boots, flashing lights, etc., along with at least 6 warning signs and three barricades.

Read this stupidly sizzled item reflectively:
The Australian man who slipped at a Bunnings sausage sizzle says it's no laughing matter
      15 Nov 2018

The man who sparked Bunnings' controversial new rules for sausage sizzles says it's no laughing matter. Bunnings is suggesting barbecues hosted outside its stores to serve onions straight onto the bread underneath the sausage because the onions pose a slipping threat.

A man slipped on onions outside a Bunnings sausage sizzle in Australia three years ago, ABC reported. Trevor, whose last name can't be revealed because he signed a non-disclosure agreement with the hardware store, was compensated from the accident.

"I walked into store and it happened so fast, I had leather boots on ... I went down on my back," he said. Trevor said he always checked the floor whenever he goes into a Bunnings store now.
The last sentence is the critical item.

The incontrovertible conclusion is that he wasn't looking where he was walking when he slipped!

The next socialist clap-trap incontrovertible conclusion is that when there's an accident, it is always - but always - someone else's fault.

      Personal responsibility?

      Whazzat?

      Be warned.

      Stupidity is a disease.

      It's contagious.

      Choose your associates wisely.

      • Darfield shooting: Gunman dead after police opened fire when he ran over cop
        25 Nov 2018
Two police officers tried to stop the vehicle by laying road spikes. As they were doing so, the man drove the vehicle toward one of the officers, hitting him and causing a serious leg injury.
No joke for the unfortunate police officer, but will WorkSafe be prosecuting the Commissioner of Police for failing to provide a safe work environment? Probably not, but with the idiocy that prevails, you never know!

        • ^^ Why did the officer shoot at all? There was no actual threat to life.

          • Franz Josef truck ferry shuts down after authorities warn of safety risk

            12 April 2019

It had to happen, didn't it? A real "let's do this" bit of kiwi ingenuity, while the bureaucrats sat in their offices with their lips and fingers pursed, someone gets on with what's needed. From what I could tell from various items, he wasn't even covering his costs!

The totally inept Tax 'em Tooth Fairy Apocalypse & Co ride again!!

In the old days this guy would be on the telly. People would be giving him a slap on the back and going "Good on ya mate!" and dropping off the odd crate of beer etc.

Now we wring our hands and say "Ooooh you can't do that..."

Then something bad would happen and everyone would be wondering how we let that happen.

                    • No, they would have realised there was a risk involved and absolved others of any responsibility before they asked to be carried across the river by dump truck

Oh FFS, guess we all better wear a high viz vest, steel cap boots, ear muffs and safety glasses around the place, all the time then?

Otherwise "Something might happen!" and we'd be unprepared for it.

                        The sky is falling!!!!!!

I never said the sky was falling.
My point is that people like to say how it was all good back when - it wasn't.
I think we are a bit OTT with health and safety now but we also weren't all OK then.
Somewhere a bit closer to the middle would be better.

It used to be comon sense prevailed - unfortunately common sense doesn't seem to be so common.
I think these days we try to make things so safe that people don't have to think about it (because everything is always safe) - and you know what?
They stop thinking about it and accidents then happen.
But that doesn't mean you go the other way and make things unsafe so they are always thinking about it.
