We had a retaining wall built one year ago which is now failing. It's maximum height is 1m and it's now falling over about 300mm from it's original angulation. Initially I thought it was due to the soft ground and from machinery (diggers) going passed it but I noticed the 150mm posts are at 1.5m centres which seems out of step with the 900mm centres described in all the "how to" pages online. I want to take this up with the builder, but also want to be 100% sure that it doesn't meet "code", any ideas where that might be found. Cheers

I remember asking at the time how deep the posts went and the answer was they went down as far as the height of the wall was ie. 1m=1m deep. It was a dry time of the year and the ground was like rock to dig by hand so I can't be sure how far they went. But the posts are definitely 1.5m apart. We had digger travel passed the wall a few times no closer than a metre or so.

would like to see behind the wall to see the post clearer
They look like 100x100 post?? not 150 post as stated or perhaps they are 125 x 125 piles?? at 1.5 centres these would be too far apart I suspect
I suspect the slope is slipping and pulling the wall over Building on a slope is problematic a cut into the hill maight have worked but this is different
You need an engineer, who provided the design?

Second and third post from the right suggest to me that they have been set too shallow into the ground.

Any idea how long the posts were?
They haven't been cut by the looks of it so that would tell you how far in the ground they go.
The other thing I'd look at is are the posts now leaning?
If so I'd suggest they just aren't deep enough.
At the end of the day the builder designed and built - it doesn't work as a retaining wall - get them back to fix on their tab.
