After finding a comment about it on here I joined the House Rentals Auckland Facebook page. Whilst I feel sorry for them almost every "complaint" post is from a 15 to 19 year old part maori solo mum/pregnant wanting a house in Auckland. If you click through to their profiles many are flashing gang handshakes and partying/drinking pics.
They are hardly a typical cross section of Auckland renters.......

Someone should ask the author of such pro-tenant articles, and ask what would they expect if they rent out their personal car to a stranger.
What condition do they expect their car to be when they get it back.
We landlords, especially the ones in Auckland, are renting out houses that are worth a few Lamborghinis each, and these reporters who depend on a paycheck expect us to treat our assets poorly in favour of tenants who can't get ahead of themselves?

They'll never change Gary. Even reverend Beales comments, a man I know and respect, are out of line. It's basically a kiwi thing where getting ahead and success, outside of sport,a re not to be tolerated or enjoyed. Basically they are communist/socialist ideals that you are not allowed to have things others don't have and in the case of property there is a complete misunderstanding of the business side of it.
Many of us struggle for years/decades to set ourselves up for retirement and of four kids and there is no understanding of that side of the debate. Debt, stress, management etc. The only counter they "hear" is the illegal flippers and traders that supposedly litter the landscape. When I started 12 years ago it was exactly the same and I am sure older heads will affirm it was probably the same 20 or 30 years ago. It's just more visible thanks to the inter web now.

I would not be surprised if the reverend gentleman's comments get rather the opposite reaction. After all, there are many landlords in NZ, most with only 1 or 2 places, and they are more likely to praise that landlord than vilify him. Add in the aspirational and upwardly mobile and there will be few remaining that agree with the rev. If he treats his congregation the same way chances are numbers are shrinking.
A lot of truth in that old saying “If a man is not a socialist by the time he is 20, he has no heart. If he is not a conservative by the time he is 40, he has no brain.”

I have felt in recent time, and a good south Auckland property manager said the same thing a few weeks back, that at lot of bad tenants have moved out of Manurewa and they are actually getting good quality people.
My point is that Manurewa capital gains (and maybe rent me things) reflect that, and it does "seem" a much better area, unlike Ranui / Massey.
But, you have to ask the question, where do the bad tenants go ?
Where have they gone ?
